Chapter 4 - The House on the Lake

The sun was sinking below the horizon, painting the sky over Lake Chapala in brilliant hues of blood-orange and violet.

The lake house was a secluded, gated villa built on a cliff overlooking the water, far from the main highway. It had been purchased five years ago using company profits—a place where Mariana used to bring the girls for summer vacations before Arturo transformed it into his private getaway.

I pulled my old sedan up the winding gravel driveway, stopping in front of the tall stone archway. Arturo’s white SUV was parked near the entrance, alongside a dark sedan belonging to his private security guards.

I stepped out of the car, carrying a black leather folder containing duplicate copies of the trust documents, along with a decoy USB drive in my pocket. Inside my jacket, concealed against my ribs, was my father’s old 1911 Colt .45 pistol—a relic from my family's ranching days that I had kept locked in my safe for twenty years. I had no intention of letting Arturo harm those girls.

The heavy wooden front door was unlocked. I pushed it open, stepping into the high-ceilinged living room.

Arturo sat in a leather armchair near the unlit fireplace, swirling a glass of scotch. Two burly men in black suits stood near the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the lake.

Sitting on a sofa near the corner were Renata and six-year-old Abril. Abril was clinging to her older sister, her face buried in Renata’s lap, sobbing quietly. When Renata saw me walk in, her eyes widened with relief.

"Grandpa!" Renata cried out.

"Stay where you are, girls," I commanded gently, keeping my eyes fixed on Arturo. "Everything is going to be okay."

Arturo took a slow sip of his drink, setting the glass down on a glass side table. He looked relaxed, almost bored, but the tense vein throbbing on his temple betrayed his anxiety.

"You're five minutes late, Ernesto," Arturo said, standing up and buttoning his jacket. "Where are the files?"

"Where is Lucía?" I asked, looking around the room.

"She’s still locked in the school bathroom back in Guadalajara with the police guarding her," Arturo snickered. "She was too smart for her own good. But two out of three is more than enough leverage to make you cooperate."

"You're insane, Arturo," I said, walking toward the center of the room. "You murdered my daughter. You tried to throw your own children into an orphanage. Do you really think signing a piece of paper is going to save you from what’s coming?"

Brenda stepped out from the hallway, wearing an expensive designer coat, holding a leather envelope. "Stop talking, old man. Hand over the USB drive and sign the documents. We have a private boat waiting at the dock to take us across the lake to a private airstrip."

"There is no boat coming, Brenda," I said, looking directly at her. "The State Prosecutor has already issued warrants for both of your arrests. The police know about BG Holdings. They know about the heavy-metal derivative you imported from Manzanillo."

Brenda’s eyes darted nervously toward Arturo. "Arturo? What is he talking about? You said he had no proof!"

"Shut up, Brenda!" Arturo snapped, pulling a small silver pistol from his waistband and pointing it directly at my chest. "Hand over the folder, Ernesto! NOW!"

The two security guards stepped forward, reaching for their weapons.

Suddenly, the massive glass windows overlooking the lake shattered into a thousand pieces.

Red laser sights danced across the walls and ceiling as heavy flashbang grenades bounced across the marble floor, exploding with deafening booms and blinding white light.

"STATE POLICE! DOWN ON THE GROUND! DON'T MOVE!"

Helicopter blades roared overhead as heavily armed tactical officers from the Jalisco State Special Operations Command burst through the shattered windows and front doors, their assault rifles raised.

The two security guards immediately threw their weapons to the floor, dropping to their knees with their hands behind their heads.

Brenda screamed, dropping her leather envelope and falling to the floor, weeping hysterically.

Arturo, blinded by the flashbang and panicked beyond reason, swung his pistol toward the girls' sofa, screaming, "STAY BACK OR I'LL SHOOT!"

Before he could pull the trigger, I moved with a speed I didn't know an old man possessed. I lunged forward, grabbing Arturo’s gun wrist, forcing the barrel upward toward the ceiling just as a shot fired with a deafening BANG, shattering the chandelier above us.

I brought my heavy right fist down across his jaw with all the fury of a father who had lost his daughter.

Arturo’s head snapped back. He staggered, dropping the gun onto the carpet.

Two tactical officers tackled him to the floor, slamming his face into the shattered glass, pulling his arms behind his back and clicking heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.

"GET OFF ME!" Arturo shrieked, struggling against the floor. "I AM THE FATHER! I HAVE RIGHTS!"

I stood over him, breathing heavily, looking down at the pathetic creature who had brought so much pain to my family.

"You lost your rights the moment you hurt Mariana," I said, my voice echoing clearly over the noise of the tactical officers securing the room. "You're going to prison for the rest of your life, Arturo."

I turned away from him, rushing over to the sofa, pulling Renata and tiny Abril into my arms. They held onto me with all their strength, their small tears soaking my coat as the police cleared the house.

"It's over, my sweet girls," I whispered, kissing their foreheads. "It's finally over."
