Chapter 2 - The Folder on the Mahogany

Arthur Bell opened his worn leather folder with a crisp, deliberate snap that cut through the silence of the private dining room like a gavel falling in a courtroom.

"Arthur," Margaret Vale warned, her silver-haired matriarchal poise cracking for the first time all evening. "This is a private family dinner celebrating Daniel's contract. Keep your legal theatrics out of it."

"With respect, Margaret," Arthur said, pulling out a thick sheaf of white documents bound in red tape, "this isn't a family dinner anymore. It became an evidence crime scene thirty seconds ago."

Daniel stood up, his face flushed with anger. "Are you out of your mind, Arthur? You retired two years ago! You have no standing here!"

"I retired from litigation, Daniel," Arthur replied mildly, putting on his half-moon reading glasses. "I did not retire from my position as the senior trustee of the Vance-Vale Estate Trust—established by Nora’s grandfather fifty years ago."

The room collectively gasped. Several city councilmen at the end of the table leaned forward, their eyes darting nervously between Daniel and Arthur.

Elise's smug smile faltered. "What is he talking about, Daniel?"

Daniel didn't answer her. His eyes were wide, staring at the red-bound documents in Arthur's hands. "Arthur... don't."

"Under Section 4B of the municipal contract signed this morning," Arthur continued, his voice calm, clear, and ringing across the mahogany table, "Vale & Rowe's eligibility for the $120 million city development project relies entirely on credit guarantees provided by the Vance-Vale Estate Trust."

Arthur turned his sharp, blue gaze toward Nora.

"The trust agreement explicitly states that if the managing partner engages in acts of moral turpitude, spousal battery, or public defamation against a trustee—which Nora is—the trust retains the immediate, unilateral right to freeze all capital guarantees."

Elise let out a sharp, nervous laugh. "Battery? I'm the one who slapped her! Daniel didn't do anything!"

Arthur looked over his glasses at Elise with a look of profound pity. "Miss Marlow, under Massachusetts civil conspiracy law, standing by, holding the assailant's hand, and instructing the victim not to make a scene constitutes joint liability and tacit authorization. In short: Daniel just slapped his own credit line."

Nora stood up slowly. She smoothed down her dark velvet dress, unhurried and completely unaffected by the red welt swelling on her cheek.

"Arthur," Nora said quietly. "Is the freeze effective immediately?"

"The moment you sign page fourteen, my dear," Arthur smiled faintly, handing her an antique Montblanc pen. "And as of 8:15 PM, Vale & Rowe’s accounts are locked."
