Chapter 2 - The Fall of the Empire

By 11:30 AM, the blizzard had cleared, leaving the city wrapped in a brilliant, blinding sunlight that reflected off the snow like crushed diamonds.

I sat in the office of Victoria Mercer—the city’s most formidable family law attorney—located on the thirtieth floor of a downtown skyscraper. Victoria was a woman in her fifties with sharp grey eyes, impeccably tailored suits, and a reputation for dismantling corrupt wealthy families in court.

Emily sat beside me, her arm wrapped in clean white bandages, holding a hot cup of tea.

Victoria leaned back in her leather chair, reviewing the medical report from the emergency clinic, the photographs of Emily’s injuries, and the text message Richard had sent me at 7:42 AM.

"Mr. Harper," Victoria said, setting the papers down with a sharp clack. "Your brother-in-law’s text message constitutes explicit witness intimidation, extortion, and filing a false report to a state agency. Combined with the physical assault documented by the ER physician, your mother is facing felony battery charges."

"My mother will try to buy her way out," I said coldly. "She has connections with the county prosecutor."

Victoria let out a soft, icy laugh. "She had connections, Mr. Harper. I spoke with Agent Marcus Vance twenty minutes ago. The FBI has already frozen all primary accounts associated with Harper Real Estate and Vance Medical. Your mother and brother-in-law no longer have the financial liquidity to buy a cup of coffee, let alone a county prosecutor."

Just then, my phone began to ring.

The screen displayed my mother’s name. I placed the call on speaker and set the phone in the middle of Victoria’s desk.

"Daniel!" my mother’s voice shrieked through the speaker. She was no longer the composed, terrifying matriarch who ruled our family with cold authority. Her voice was hysterical, cracked, and trembling with wild panic. "Daniel, what have you done?! Federal agents are at Richard’s clinic! They’re seizing the files! They just served a search warrant at my house!"

I didn't answer immediately. I let the silence stretch for five long seconds across the line.

"Daniel, answer me!" she screamed. "Tell them it’s a mistake! Tell them you made a false report! Richard is being detained! Vanessa is hysterical!"

"Did you call the police when you struck my wife across the face, Mom?" I asked, my voice terrifyingly calm. "Did you offer an apology when you threw her into a crystal bar cart and watched her bleed onto your floor?"

"She insulted Vanessa!" my mother raged, trying to grasp at her fading authority. "She was disrespectful in my home! She is an outsider who never belonged in our social circle! You are destroying your own blood for a woman who came from nothing!"

Emily leaned forward, her voice clear, steady, and utterly devoid of fear.

"I didn't come from nothing, Margaret," Emily said softly into the microphone. "I came from a mother who taught me honesty, love, and dignity. Things your millions could never buy you."

There was a sudden, sharp gasp on the other end of the line, followed by the muffled sound of heavy footsteps and loud, authoritative male voices in the background.

"Margaret Harper?" a stern voice echoed over the phone speaker. "I am Special Agent Marcus Vance with the FBI. You are under arrest for federal tax fraud, conspiracy to launder money, and obstruction of justice. Step away from the desk and put your hands behind your back."

"Daniel! DANIEL! HELP ME!" my mother shrieked.

The line went dead.

Victoria Mercer smiled faintly, closing her leather notebook. "Phase one is complete, Mr. and Mrs. Harper. Now, let’s move on to phase two: securing full legal protective orders and ensuring your family’s total financial independence."
