Chapter 2: The Sound of Authority

The headlights that cut through the sheer curtains of 1294 Oak Haven Lane didn't belong to a standard patrol car. They belonged to a heavy-duty Chevrolet Tahoe, the black brush guard on the front bumper gleaming under the porch light. Alex Ramirez hadn't been across town; he had been writing a traffic report three blocks away at the intersection of Elm and Oak.

The heavy thud of a vehicle door closing echoed through the quiet neighborhood.

Jared’s hand, which had been raised toward me in a half-hearted threat, froze mid-air. The bourbon-fueled bravado in his eyes flickered, replaced for a fraction of a second by a look of sheer, panicked calculation. He looked at his mother, but Claudia was no longer smirking. Her napkin was clutched so tightly in her manicured hand that her knuckles were turning as gray as her hair.

"Ryan," Sarah finally spoke, her voice a thin, brittle thing that sounded like dry leaves being crushed underfoot. She finally looked up from her plate, her eyes wide and wet with a terrifying mix of fear and shame. "Ryan, please. Don't do this. He’s my brother. If the neighbors see police cars outside..."

"He hit Lily, Sarah," I said, my voice entirely flat, devoid of the anger that was currently scorching the inside of my ribs. I didn't look at her. I kept my hand on Lily’s shoulder, feeling the small, rhythmic tremors running through her body. "He hit our daughter. The neighbors are going to see exactly what kind of house this is."

The front doorbell didn't ring. Alex didn't have time for manners. Instead, three heavy, metallic raps shook the solid oak door, followed by a voice that had spent fifteen years commanding respect on the state highways.

"Sheriff’s Department! Open the door!"

Claudia stood up from the head of the table, her silverware rattling against her fine china. "Jared, sit down. Sarah’s brother, David, open the door. It’s just a misunderstanding. We are a respected family in this county; no deputy is going to make a scene over a family discipline matter."

David, the brother who had been staring at his phone, scrambled to his feet like a dog responding to a whistle. He threw the front door open, his face twisted into a weak, accommodating smile. "Deputy Ramirez! Hey, man. Look, it’s just a little loud in here, we’re having Thanksgiving dinner—"

Alex didn't look at David. He didn't take off his Stetson. He stepped past him into the dining room, his heavy duty belt clicking, the scent of the cold November rain clinging to his dark brown jacket. His eyes scanned the room in less than a second—the half-eaten turkey, the frozen adults, Jared standing with his chest puffed out, and me, kneeling on the floor next to a ten-year-old girl with blood on her collar.

The temperature in the room seemed to drop twenty degrees.

"Ryan," Alex said, his boots clicking on the tile as he walked directly past Jared, completely ignoring him as if he were nothing but a piece of ugly furniture. He knelt down beside me, his large hand gently lifting Lily’s chin. "Hey, sweet pea. Remember me? It’s Deputy Alex. Can you tell me where it hurts?"

"My... my cheek," Lily whispered, her voice cracking as she looked at his silver badge. "And my arm when I fell."

Alex looked at the split lip, the dark red swelling already puffing up her left jawline, and the distinct outline of four fingers stamped into her pale skin. He stood up slowly. When he turned around to face Jared, the professional neutrality was gone from his face. There was only the cold, hard steel of a lawman who had seen too many bullies hide behind expensive addresses.

"Jared Vance," Alex said, his hand moving to the leather holster at his hip. "Step away from the table. Put your hands behind your back."
