Chapter 3 - The Unraveling

I wasn't wearing pajamas. I wasn't barefoot.
I wore a tailored, pitch-black Alexander McQueen pantsuit that my father had bought me when I passed my forensic accounting board exams. My hair was pulled back into a tight, flawless bun. The right side of my face was pristine, but I had deliberately left the left side completely un-concealed—the dark purple hematoma stretched from my temple to my jawline, and the three stark white surgical butterfly bandages on my split lower lip stood out like a declaration of war.
Behind me walked Abigail Glenn, flanked by two uniformed officers from the NYPD Major Crimes Division, and Detective Miller holding an official judicial envelope.
Lara gasped, her hand flying to her throat as her face drained of every drop of color. "Clara?!"
Brandon’s mouth opened, but no sound came out. The pen in his hand slipped from his fingers, clattering loudly against the mahogany table and rolling across the white contract paper.
"Good morning, gentlemen," I said, my voice smooth, clear, and utterly terrifying in its composure. I walked down the center of the boardroom, my high heels clicking against the marble floor with the steady rhythm of a ticking clock. "I apologize for my slight delay. I was spending the early morning hours with the Chief Medical Examiner at Precinct 4."
Arthur Henderson stood up so fast his chair rolled back into the credenza. "Clara! Good God... your face! What happened to you?!"
"Ask my devoted husband, Arthur," I said softly, stopping at the foot of the table, directly opposite Brandon.
Brandon stumbled back half a step, his eyes darting frantically toward the door, then toward the police officers standing silently near the entrance. "Clara... you're... you're hysterical! Arthur, don't listen to her! She escaped from her care facility! Officers, take her into custody! She has an active psychiatric hold!"
Detective Miller stepped forward, pulling a document from his coat. "The psychiatric hold order issued by Dr. Harold Vance was revoked by a state supreme court judge forty-five minutes ago, Mr. Sterling. Dr. Vance is currently under arrest for medical fraud, falsifying state documents, and accepting illegal kickbacks."
Brandon’s knees visibly buckled. He reached out, gripping the edge of the mahogany table to keep himself upright.
"What is the meaning of this?!" Lara shrieked, stepping in front of her son like a cornered viper. "This is a private corporate meeting! You have no right to parade your staged injuries in front of this board! She fell down the stairs, Arthur! She’s trying to frame my son because he tried to put her in treatment!"
"Fell down the stairs?" Abigail Glenn stepped forward, opening a heavy leather briefcase. She pulled out a high-definition tablet and tapped the screen once.
The forty-foot digital presentation monitor on the wall of the boardroom instantly flickered to life.
A crystal-clear, 4K night-vision camera feed illuminated the dark room.
The audio boomed through the surrounding ceiling speakers:
[SOUND OF A BLANKET BEING RIPPED]
[SOUND OF A HEAVY CRASH AND SKINFRACTURING IMPACT]
BRANDON'S VOICE: "Get up, you useless woman!"
[LARA’S LAUGHTER ECHOES FROM THE DOORWAY]
LARA'S VOICE: "Maybe now she'll finally learn whose house this really is."
The silence that followed the six-second video clip was terrifying.
Arthur Henderson looked from the giant screen to the brutal, purple hematoma on my face. His face turned a deep, apocalyptic shade of crimson. He turned his head slowly, looking at Brandon with an intensity that could have withered steel.
"You..." Henderson whispered, his voice trembling with an ancient, furious rage. "You put your hands on Marcus Sterling’s daughter?"
"Arthur, listen to me!" Brandon stammered, his voice reaching a pathetic, high-pitched squeak. "It was... it was a domestic dispute! She was withholding corporate access! She was sabotaging the company!"
"I wasn't sabotaging the company, Brandon," I said, opening my own folder and laying three thick stacks of forensic accounting ledgers onto the center of the table. "I was auditing it."
I pointed to the top ledger.
"For eighteen months, Brandon and Lara Sterling have operated an illegal embezzling structure within Sterling Infrastructure. Through fabricated vendor invoices from Crestview Logistics—a shell firm registered to Lara’s maiden name in Panama—they have stolen three point nine million dollars from our primary operational reserves."
I turned my eyes to Lara, whose hands were shaking so violently her diamond rings rattled against her gold bracelet.
"And three days ago," I continued, "Brandon forged my signature on an emergency voting trust transfer, attempting to grant himself absolute authority to execute a seventy-million-dollar supply subcontract with that very same shell company."
"That's a lie!" Lara screamed, her refined, wealthy persona completely disintegrating into unhinged madness. "You have no proof! My son built this company while you sat in the dark crying over your dead father!"
"My father built this empire with his bare hands, Lara," I said, stepping closer until I was standing less than three feet from her. "Your son couldn't build a doghouse without stealing the timber."

Detective Miller walked down the length of the table, pulling two pairs of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt.
"Brandon Sterling. Lara Sterling," Detective Miller announced, his voice echoing off the high glass walls. "You are both under arrest for Grand Larceny, Corporate Fraud, Forgery in the First Degree, and Felony Domestic Battery with Aggravated Intent."
