Chapter 6 - The Fall of Sterling GlobalThree weeks passed. Snow continued to fall over Manhattan, turning the city into a grid of white and grey.

While I remained tucked away in a quiet brownstone in West Village that Clara and I had rented, the financial world outside was experiencing an earthquake.

The news of our divorce had leaked to the Wall Street Journal. It wasn't just a gossip story; it was a financial catastrophe for Blackwell Global. The discovery of the Cayman accounts and the illicit leverage games involving Victoria Sterling forced the Securities and Exchange Commission to open an informal inquiry into Ambrose’s corporate transactions.

The board of directors was merciless.

On a cold Tuesday morning, the board held a vote of no confidence. Ambrose Blackwell, the man who had founded the company in a garage fifteen years ago, was stripped of his Chief Executive title and placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the divorce settlement and SEC audit.

Meanwhile, Victoria Sterling was facing her own nightmare.

When the news broke that Ambrose had used shell accounts to finance her luxury lifestyle, her father, Arthur Sterling—a proud, ruthless patriarch of old industrial wealth—was humiliated. He publicly canceled the merger with Blackwell Global, disowned Victoria from the family trust, and fired her from her executive role at Sterling Logistics.

One afternoon, while I was sitting in my cozy living room working on interior design blueprints for a new boutique hotel in Hudson—my first independent contract in four years—my phone rang.

It was an unknown number.

I answered carefully. "Hello?"

"Jacqueline?"

The voice was thin, high-pitched, and trembling with rage. Victoria Sterling.

"Miss Sterling," I said, setting my architectural pen down on the draft board. "I’m surprised you have my private line."

"You ruined my life!" Victoria shrieked through the speaker. "You absolute bitch! You leaked those bank statements to the press! You destroyed my family’s reputation, you got me fired, and now my father won't even take my calls!"

I leaned back in my chair, feeling remarkably calm. "I didn't leak anything to the press, Victoria. The court documents became public record during the asset freezing hearing. If your father disowned you, it’s because he realized his daughter traded her dignity to be the mistress of a married man."

"He was going to leave you for me!" Victoria sneered defensively, though her voice lacked conviction. "He told me he didn't love you anymore! He told me you were boring, that you had turned into a domestic drone who only cared about nursery colors!"

A small, sad smile touched my lips. "Did he tell you that? How strange. Because two weeks ago, that same man was weeping on his knees outside my hotel door, begging me to take him back while he called you a 'stupid leverage game.'"

Silence fell over the line. I could hear Victoria’s sharp, ragged breathing.

"Ambrose Blackwell doesn't love anyone but himself, Victoria," I said gently. "He used me for my mind to build his company, and he used you for your family’s name to acquire Sterling Logistics. We were both tools in his chest. The only difference is... I realized it in time to get out."

"He’s broke, Jacqueline," Victoria whispered, her rage suddenly turning into hollow bitterness. "The board stripped his stock options. The SEC is freezing his accounts. He’s living in a private bungalow in Greenwich, drinking himself to sleep every night."

"Then he finally has time to think about what really matters," I replied quietly. "Have a nice life, Victoria."

I hung up the phone and blocked the number permanently.
