Chapter 4 - The Aftermath in Greenwich

Two days later, the rain was pouring in sheets over our sprawling estate in Greenwich, Connecticut.

The imposing iron gates at the entrance of the property—gates Grant had proudly shown off to architectural digest photographers just six months ago—stood wide open, battered by the wind. Inside the house, the grand foyer was quiet, save for the steady dripping of a leaky gutter outside.

I sat in the formal study, sipping a cup of green tea while watching the rain streak down the massive floor-to-ceiling windows.

The doorbell rang.

It wasn't a polite, hesitant knock. It was a frantic, aggressive pounding that echoed hollowly through the empty halls.

I didn't move. I didn't call for domestic staff—I had already given the entire household staff a generous severance package and sent them home two days ago.

The pounding continued, followed by the sound of a rattling doorknob. Then, the front door swung open with a loud crash.

“Vivian! VIVIAN!”

The voice was shrill, desperate, and hysterical.

Footsteps rushed down the hallway, fast and uncoordinated, splashing water across the hardwood floors before bursting through the double doors of the study.

It was Vanessa.

She looked unrecognizable. The glamorous, immaculately styled Yale graduate who had wrapped herself in my silk robe two nights ago was completely gone. Her designer trench coat was soaked through, her blonde hair plastered against her pale face like wet spiderwebs, and her mascara was running in thick, dark streaks down her cheeks.

She staggered into the center of the room, panting heavily, her eyes wide with a frantic, unhinged panic.

“You did this,” she hissed, pointing a shaking finger at me. “You did all of this!”

I didn't look up from my teacup. I took a slow, deliberate sip, set the porcelain saucer down on the mahogany desk, and finally raised my eyes to meet hers.

“Hello, Vanessa,” I said softly. “You look terrible.”

“Shut up!” she shrieked, taking a stumbling step forward before catching herself on the edge of a bookshelf. “Grant is arrested! The police took him from his hotel room an hour ago! They froze all our accounts! I went to use my credit card at Saks this morning, and it was declined! They repossessed my car from the apartment parking lot thirty minutes ago! Everything is gone!”

“Not everything,” I replied calmly, leaning back in my leather executive chair and crossing my legs. “You still have your clothes. Well, whatever you managed to pack before the landlords evicted you from the downtown penthouse, anyway.”

Vanessa stared at me as if I were a monster. Her chest heaved as she tried to catch her breath, the reality of her shattered fantasy crashing down on her all at once. She had thought she was stepping into a life of billionaire luxury by stealing her best friend’s husband. She never realized she was tying her anchor to a drowning man.

“You’re a psychopath,” she whispered, her voice trembling with pure venom. “You played us. You sat back and watched us walk right into your trap!”

“I didn't play you, Vanessa,” I said, my voice dropping into a cold, unyielding register that made her flinch. “You played yourselves. My husband was a fraud, and my best friend was a thief. You deserved each other from the very beginning. The only mistake I made was taking too long to realize it.”

Vanessa’s face twisted in rage. She lunged forward, her hands clawing at the air as if she wanted to tear my throat out, just like she had tried to steal my life.

“I’ll ruin you!” she screamed, taking two steps toward the desk. “I’ll tell everyone what a cold, calculating monster you are! I’ll go to the press!”

Before she could take another step, the study doors swung open wide.

Julian Vance stepped into the room, flanked by two private security operatives. He didn't say a word. He simply raised a digital tablet and played a crisp, high-definition audio recording.

“...I never loved her, Vanessa. She was just a quiet background fixture. Once I have full control of the trust, I’ll dump her and take everything...”

Grant’s voice echoed clearly through the silent room—recorded during one of their secret phone calls three weeks ago, intercepted and archived by my private cybersecurity team.

Vanessa froze mid-stride. Her mouth parted in silent horror as she realized every single word they had ever spoken behind my back had been cataloged, recorded, and filed away.

“If you speak to the press, Ms. Park,” Julian said in a cool, menacingly polite tone, “our legal team will immediately release the full dossier of your intellectual property theft, corporate espionage, and illegal kickback schemes associated with Grant’s shadow accounts. You won't just be broke—you’ll be sharing a prison block with your beloved boyfriend.”

Vanessa staggered backward, her strength completely evaporating. She hit the wall, slid down until she was sitting on the hardwood floor, and buried her face in her hands, sobbing uncontrollably.

I didn't watch her cry. I didn't feel a shred of sympathy.

I stood up, smoothed down the lapels of my blazer, and walked past her without a single backward glance, leaving her weeping on the floor of the empire she had tried to steal.
