Chapter 6 - A NEW SUNRISE

One Year Later.
The summer breeze carried the sweet scent of fresh-cut grass and ocean air through the backyard of our new home.
We were hosting a summer backyard barbecue to celebrate Noah’s first birthday. Bright yellow balloons bounced against the wooden fence, and cheerful children's music echoed soft and sweet through the garden.
Dr. Patel stood near the grill, laughing with my sister Maya as they flipped burgers. Over the past year, Dr. Patel had become a dear family friend and an outspoken advocate for maternal health awareness, working alongside Maya and me to establish a local support foundation for new mothers facing medical gaslighting and domestic abuse.
"Mommy! Look!" Lily cheered, sprinting across the soft grass in a bright floral dress.
She held up a brand-new drawing she had painted at school. It showed a bright, golden sun shining over a big red house. Beneath the sun stood three figures holding hands: a strong woman with long brown hair, a happy little boy holding a toy rattle, and a little girl holding a brown teddy bear.
Above the woman, Lily had written in big, colorful letters: MY HERO.
I knelt down on the grass, gathering Lily into my arms, pressing a warm kiss against her forehead. "It's the most beautiful painting in the world, sweetheart."
Noah came crawling over at top speed, his little cheeks covered in chocolate birthday cake frosting, letting out a loud, delighted squeal as he tackled my knees.
I sat on the soft grass, holding both of my children close to my chest, breathing in the smell of baby lotion, sunshine, and absolute safety.
I looked up at the vast blue sky above us.
The days of doubting my own sanity, of shivering in cold medical rooms while being dismissed, of trusting people who meant us harm—were gone forever.

I had listened to my motherly instinct when the whole world told me I was crazy. I had saved my son's life, protected my daughter, and rebuilt a life founded on love, truth, and unyielding courage.
As Noah giggled and reached his chubby hands up toward the warm sun, I smiled, knowing with absolute certainty that we were finally, truly home.
