Chapter 5 - Uncovering the Melody

Two months passed.

The storm that had surrounded Michael Hartman’s life finally cleared. Richard was removed from the board of directors and faced federal fraud charges alongside Julian Vance, whose illegal slumlord empire collapsed under government investigation.

Hartman Mining flourished under Michael’s renewed leadership, but his primary focus was no longer corporate profits—it was the little girl who had given him a reason to live.

Lily’s skin had regained its healthy color, her hollow cheeks filling out, her laughter filling the once-silent halls of the Hartman Estate. She was enrolled in a prestigious private academy, excelled in art, and spent her afternoons playing in the sprawling gardens with a new golden retriever puppy Michael had adopted for her.

Yet, despite her happiness, a quiet sadness still lingered in Lily’s heart.

One evening, as Michael sat beside her bed reading a storybook, Lily looked up at him with quiet eyes.

"Michael?" she asked softly.

"Yes, sweetheart?"

"I still can't remember my mom's song," she admitted, tears welling up in her eyes. "I remember the big house, I remember you... but every night I try to hear her voice, and it's just gone. What if I forget her completely?"

Michael set the book down, his heart aching for her. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small velvet box he had retrieved from a private bank vault earlier that day.

He opened it, revealing an old, polished silver ring set with a small blue sapphire—the ring police had recovered from Vance’s safe.

Lily gasped, her small hands flying to her mouth. "Mommy's ring...!"

"We found it, Lily," Michael smiled gently, sliding the ring onto a thin platinum chain and fastening it around her neck like a necklace. "And we found something else, too."

Michael stood up and walked over to an old vintage record player sitting on the nightstand. He placed a worn vinyl record onto the turntable and gently lowered the needle.

Static crackled softly through the speakers, followed by the sweet, clear sound of a piano playing a gentle lullaby. Then, a woman's voice began to sing—soft, melodic, and beautiful.

“Sail away on the golden boat, across the starlight sea... where dreams are born and angels float, come back to me...”

Lily froze, her mouth open, tears pouring down her cheeks.

"Mommy...?" Lily sobbed, jumping out of bed and running to the record player, touching the spinning vinyl with trembling fingers. "That's her! That's my mommy's voice!"

"Your mother was a music teacher at the Denver Conservatory before she got sick, Lily," Michael explained gently, kneeling beside her. "She recorded this song for the school twenty years ago. I bought the master tapes from the archive yesterday."

Lily buried her face in Michael’s chest, crying tears of pure, overwhelming joy as her mother’s song filled the warm, cozy bedroom.

Michael held her tight, staring up at the framed photograph of Emily resting on the mantle. In that moment, he felt Emily’s presence—not as a painful ghost of the past, but as a warm, approving smile watching over them both.
