Chapter 4 - The File on Table TwelveAt 7:00 AM the following morning, Henrique sat in his executive corner office on the fortieth floor of the Vasconcelos Tower on Avenida Faria Lima.

Standing in front of his desk was Roberto, his chief of corporate intelligence and private security. Roberto placed a slim manila folder on the polished obsidian desk.

"Lucia Maria dos Santos," Roberto stated, clicking a pen. "Twenty-six years old. Born in a small rural town in the interior of Minas Gerais. Moved to São Paulo five years ago to study special education and pediatric occupational therapy at the Federal University of São Paulo."

Henrique opened the folder. "She's a university student?"

"She was," Roberto replied. "Top of her class. But fourteen months ago, her mother suffered a debilitating stroke requiring round-the-clock nursing care. Lucia had to suspend her degree three semesters before graduation to work multiple jobs. She works the breakfast shift at a commercial bakery in Pinheiros, clean-up shifts at Le Miroir six nights a week, and volunteers on Sunday mornings at a community center for neurodivergent children in Capão Redondo."

Henrique reviewed the financial breakdown. Her monthly income was less than what he spent on dry cleaning and private jet fuel in a week. Her rent in a modest neighborhood on the south side was two weeks overdue; her mother’s medical supplies were purchased through informal credit lines at a neighborhood pharmacy.

"Why didn't she take the five thousand reais?" Henrique murmured to himself, staring at the photocopied student ID showing a young woman with determined, honest eyes and a gentle smile.

"Because," Roberto said quietly, having served Henrique’s family for twenty years, "not everyone in this city views dignity as an asset to be traded, Boss."

Henrique closed the folder with a snap.

"Cancel my morning meetings with the bank syndicate," Henrique commanded, grabbing his coat from the leather sofa.

"Sir?" Roberto blinked in surprise. "The German consortium is arriving at ten for the port logistics signing—"

"Reschedule them for tomorrow," Henrique said, striding toward the private executive elevator. "Bring the car around. We're going to Pinheiros."
