Chapter 1: The Trap is Set

The heavy glass doors of the hospital lobby closed behind Adrian and Celeste, sealing them out of my sight. For a full minute, the only sound in the private room was the rhythmic, soft breathing of my triplet sons—Leo, Max, and Sam. I stared at the blank signature line on the divorce papers scattered across my blanket. Adrian thought he had broken me. He thought that by bringing his mistress into my recovery room, flaunting a luxury bag, and insulting my swollen, post-partum body, he had secured a total victory.

He had no idea that he had just handed me the rope to hang his entire future.

I picked up my phone again. My hands were still shaking from the physical toll of delivering three babies, but my mind was sharper than it had been in five years. "Dad," I said, my voice no longer cracking. The tears were gone, replaced by a cold, burning resolve. "He bought her a Birkin with the company's secondary account. I just checked my banking notification app. And he transferred the title of our marital home to her name three days ago, while I was in active labor."

On the other end of the line, Arthur Vance—a man whose real net worth could buy Adrian’s entire family lineage ten times over—let out a low, dangerous chuckle. For five years, I had hidden my family’s massive wealth from Adrian. I had wanted to marry for "true love," wanting to build a life from scratch without the shadow of the Vance empire. My parents had warned me that Adrian was a social climber, a man blinded by greed, but I had been too stubborn to listen. I had even changed my last name to his, cutting ties with my family’s lifestyle to prove my independence.

"He moved assets during the marriage, right before a divorce filing, while you were incapacitated," my father said, his voice dripping with an icy authority that made billion-dollar CEOs tremble in boardrooms. "It’s not just stupid, Evelyn. It’s highly illegal. He just committed financial fraud. Have you signed anything?"

"Not a single page," I whispered, looking at the pristine white papers. "He told me I was too ugly to be loved. He told me I had nothing."

"Let him believe it for forty-eight hours," my mother’s voice broke in, sharp and fiercely protective. "We are already in the air, sweetheart. Our legal team is drafting the response. Sleep now. Let the wolf celebrate before the trap snaps shut."

The next morning, the hospital room door flew open. It wasn't Adrian. It was his mother, Beatrice Vale, accompanied by two burly men in cheap suits. Beatrice didn't look at her three new grandsons. Instead, she sneered at me, tossing a set of cardboard boxes onto the floor.

"Get your things packed, Evelyn," Beatrice demanded, her voice loud enough to make Leo whimper in his bassinet. "Adrian told me you refused to sign the papers yesterday. Don't be pathetic. You're a housewife with a college degree you never used. You think you can hold onto my son's mansion? The locks on the estate are being changed as we speak. Celeste is already moving her wardrobe into the master bedroom."

I forced my expression to look terrified. I pulled the hospital blanket up to my chin, letting a few tears pool in my eyes. "Beatrice, please. I just gave birth two days ago. The babies need a home. We can't be thrown out on the street."

"Then you should have kept your body in shape and your mouth shut," Beatrice snapped, gesturing to the men. "They are going to your apartment to clear out whatever rags you left behind. If you try to enter the property, the security guards Adrian hired will arrest you for trespassing. Sign the papers, take whatever small child support the court gives you, and disappear."

"Please," I sobbed, playing the part of the broken, helpless victim to perfection. "Just give me until tomorrow. Let me at least get discharged properly."

Beatrice laughed, a shrill, grating sound that mirrored her son's. "Tomorrow at noon, Evelyn. If you aren't signed and gone, we will make sure the press hears about how an unstable, jobless mother is trying to extort a rising tech entrepreneur."

They swept out of the room, leaving behind the scent of cheap entitlement. The moment the door clicked shut, I wiped my face. I grabbed my phone and dialed my father’s head of security. "Mark? They are changing the locks at the estate. Let them. But make sure every single hidden camera we installed during the renovation last year is streaming directly to our private server. I want high-definition footage of Celeste Monroe touching my things."

"Already on it, Miss Vance," Mark replied. "And your parents' private jet has just landed."

By evening, Adrian sent me a text message: [Photo attached] It was a picture of Celeste standing in my kitchen, holding a glass of champagne, wearing my favorite silk robe. The caption read: “Out with the old, in with the new. Sign by tomorrow, or I cut off your medical insurance before you leave the hospital.”

I didn't reply. I stared at my three beautiful boys, tracing their tiny fingers. "Daddy thinks he's a king," I whispered to them. "But tomorrow, he's going to find out what happens when you try to steal from a queen."
