Chapter 6 - Where the Light Lives

One month later.

The afternoon sun was soft and warm over the River Oaks estate. The heavy, dark drapes that my mother had hung throughout the mansion had been torn down, replaced by sheer white curtains that let the bright golden light flood through every room.

The smell of rotten cedar and mold was completely gone, replaced by the fresh scent of lavender, baked bread, and clean air.

On the lush green lawn behind the house—where my mother had thrown her pretentious parties—a small wooden swing set had been built beneath the canopy of a massive oak tree.

Julian was swinging high into the air, his loud, pure laughter ringing out across the gardens. He had gained weight, his cheeks were rosy and full, and he was wearing a bright blue shirt that fit him perfectly.

"Higher, Daddy! Push me higher!" Julian yelled happily, waving his hands in the air.

I walked over, catching the wooden swing gently and pushing him up into the sky. "How’s that, buddy?"

"Awesome!" Julian giggled, his brown eyes sparkling with life and joy.

Sitting on a white wooden bench near the garden was Elena.

She wore a beautiful pale yellow sundress that caught the soft breeze. Her skin had regained its healthy, warm glow, her hair was thick and shiny, and her hazel eyes were bright with a peace she hadn't known in years.

The dark circles were gone. The fear was gone.

She watched Julian with a soft, radiant smile, sipping a cup of sweet tea.

I walked over to the bench, sitting down beside her, and pulled her gently into my side. Elena leaned her head against my shoulder, wrapping her arms around my waist, resting her hand against my chest where she could feel the steady, strong rhythm of my heart.

"What are you thinking about?" I asked softly, kissing the top of her head.

"I was thinking about how bright it is," Elena whispered, looking out across the sparkling lawn. "For five years, Leo... I forgot what the sun felt like. I forgot that the world could be quiet and safe."

"It's always going to be safe now, Elena," I promised, taking her hand and kissing the silver wedding band that now fit perfectly on her finger. "Nobody is ever going to hurt you again. Nobody is ever going to lock a door on this family."

She looked up at me, her eyes filling with sweet, happy tears, and pressed her lips against mine in a long, tender kiss that erased every nightmare we had endured.

In the distance, the front gates of the estate remained open, welcoming the bright future we had fought so hard to reclaim.

My mother and sister were sitting in a state penitentiary, paying for their crimes in cold, silent cells. Marcus Sterling’s empire was reduced to dust.

But here, beneath the warm North Carolina sun, surrounded by the laughter of my son and the love of my wife, the dark era was officially over.

We were home. And the light was ours to keep.
