Chapter 4 - The Reality Check
Three weeks passed.
For the first time in her life, Mara focused entirely on herself and her children. With the help of top-tier orthopedic specialists and two wonderful full-time nannies, Mara was discharged from the hospital in a high-tech motorized wheelchair. She moved into a stunning, single-story coastal home with an expansive view of the ocean—a home filled with warmth, light, and safety for little Noah and Lily.
Meanwhile, in Pine Crest Estates, reality was hitting the Vance family like a runaway freight train.
The luxury SUV had been repossessed from the driveway on a Tuesday afternoon, right in front of all the neighbors. Claire’s boutique had been locked by the landlord, its contents impounded to cover back rent.
Without Mara’s monthly "family allowance" of $25,000, Evelyn and Richard were suddenly forced to face their actual financial situation: a meager pension of $1,800 a month and over $80,000 in credit card debt that had accumulated on cards Mara had just cancelled.
"We have to sell the jewelry! We have to do something!" Evelyn yelled, pacing around the half-packed living room filled with cardboard boxes. "The movers are coming in ten days, Richard! Where are we supposed to go?! We can't live in a two-bedroom apartment!"
"With what money, Evelyn?!" Richard snapped back, his head in his hands. He looked ten years older. "We don't have savings! You insisted on spending every penny Mara gave us! You wanted the country club, you wanted the trips, you wanted Claire to pretend she was an entrepreneur!"
"Don't you blame this on me!" Evelyn screamed. "You were the one who told her last year that repairing our roof was an 'early inheritance'! You used her just as much as I did!"
Claire sat on the couch, staring blankly at her phone. "All my friends are blocking me," she whimpered. "When I asked Sarah if I could borrow five thousand dollars, she laughed and said everyone in town knows Mara cut us off. I’m a laughingstock!"
"We need to make Mara talk to us," Evelyn said, her eyes glinting with a desperate, malicious light. "She cares about her reputation. She's a public figure in the financial tech world. If we go to the media... if we tell the press that a wealthy tech CEO left her crippled parents and young sister destitute on the street... she'll have to pay us off to save her company!"

Richard looked at his wife, horrified. "Evelyn, are you insane? She built that company from nothing after Thomas died! If you attack her publicly, she will destroy us!"
"She already destroyed us!" Evelyn roared. "Call the local news station. Tell them we have a story about the real Mara Vance."
