Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

By 2:00 AM, the study was sealed from the inside.

Elena Harper stood near the fireplace, her hands trembling violently as she held a steaming mug of tea she hadn't touched. Her face was pale, her wide eyes moving between her daughter sitting quietly on the sofa and the tall, intimidating man standing by the desk.

Luca Costello was not in his wheelchair.

He was leaning heavily against the solid mahogany desk, his long legs spread wide to maintain balance, his arms crossed over his chest. Every muscle in his legs throbbed with a terrifying, white-hot fatigue, but he refused to sit down. He had taken five agonizing, halting steps across the room twenty minutes ago, supported by Marcus, his fiercely loyal chief of security.

Marcus stood by the window, his heavy hand resting on the holster beneath his suit jacket. His face was dark with a lethal, burning rage.

"Twelve years, Boss," Marcus rasped, his voice shaking. "Twelve years we let that viper walk through these halls. I should put a bullet in her skull right now."

"No," Luca said, his tone dropping into a register so cold, so absolute, that even Marcus went still. "A bullet is too quick, Marcus. Julianna and her father didn't just ruin my life. They systematically dismantled my father's legacy while turning my captains against each other. They think I am a harmless ghost sitting in a velvet chair. We will let them keep thinking that for three more days."

Elena stepped forward, her voice tight with panic. "Luca, you can't stay here! If she realizes the injection failed, if she sees you standing—"

"She won't," Luca assured her, looking directly at the woman he had loved in a past life. "She injected the dose. She expects me to be unconscious until morning. Tomorrow, I will be in that chair as usual. But behind closed doors, Marcus will begin the mobilization."

Luca looked at Maya, who was fast asleep on the sofa, wrapped in a fleece blanket.

"Elena," Luca said softly, his fierce posture softening instantly. "Take Maya to the safehouse in Oak Park. Marcus has three men he trusts with his life who will guard the perimeter. No one—not even my senior captains—must know she is my daughter."

Elena looked at him, her eyes searching his face. "You're going to fight them."

"I am going to destroy them," Luca corrected quietly. "For twelve years, I accepted my fate because I believed I had nothing left to build a future for. I was a broken leader waiting for the end."

He walked—slowly, deliberately, each step a triumph of willpower over pain—until he reached Elena's side. He looked down at her, his dark eyes filled with an undeniable truth.

"Now I have a daughter," Luca whispered. "And I will give her the world she deserves. But first, I have to clear out the monsters."

Elena looked at the man she had thought had abandoned her a decade ago. She saw the iron resolve that had once made him the undisputed king of the city. Slowly, she reached out and touched his forearm, feeling the rigid muscle beneath his shirt.

"Be careful, Luca," she murmured. "Julianna isn't just cruel. She is brilliant. She has the entire Commission believing she is an angel."

"Angels don't bleed," Luca said coldly. "We'll see how brilliant she is when the devil comes for his crown."
