Chapter 4 - The Ambush at the Gates

Despite Grant's fierce warnings to Richard Sterling, the corporate sharks had already set their trap in motion.

At three o'clock that afternoon, Clara was standing in the estate's grand kitchen, baking cinnamon rolls with Kira. The warm scent of sugar and butter filled the house, making it feel more like a cozy family home than a cold billionaire estate.

Suddenly, the security intercom near the kitchen entrance buzzed loudly.

Clara wiped her flour-dusted hands on her apron and tapped the intercom screen. The video feed showed three black SUVs parked outside the iron security gates of the Magnolia Hill estate.

Standing in front of the gate was not Grant, but a sharp-looking female news reporter holding a microphone, accompanied by a cameraman, two security guards, and Richard Sterling himself.

Clara’s heart dropped into her stomach.

She pressed the intercom button. "May I help you?"

"This is Richard Sterling, Vice President of Mercer Urban Properties," Sterling’s voice boomed through the speaker, cold and malicious. "Open the gates immediately, Mrs. Bellamy. We are here with representatives from the city housing authority and the press to conduct an emergency welfare check on the premises."

Clara froze. "A welfare check? On whose authority?"

"On the authority of the board," Sterling lied smoothly, looking directly into the camera lens. "We have reason to believe that unapproved, unregistered individuals are residing on the corporate-owned property and that minor children are being kept in unsafe, chaotic conditions under the care of an unvetted employee."

Outside the gates, the news reporter leaned into the microphone. "We are live outside the Magnolia Hill residence of billionaire Grant Mercer, where allegations of erratic behavior, corporate negligence, and squalid living conditions have surfaced..."

Clara felt a wave of icy terror wash over her.

They were going to drag her name through the mud. They were going to display her three-year-old daughter on live local news, painting Clara as a neglectful mother and a opportunistic gold-digger. She remembered her ex-husband's cruel words when he abandoned her: 'You're nothing, Clara. Without me, you're just trash that nobody wants.'

Tears burned the backs of her eyes. She looked back at Kira, who was sitting on a high stool near the island, happily pressing her thumb into a piece of dough, completely oblivious to the monsters gathering at the gate.

"No," Clara whispered to herself, her voice shaking but turning into iron. "Not again. You don't get to ruin my child."

Clara walked to the grand front entrance. She didn't open the gates, but she stepped out onto the wide stone porch, standing tall under the light rain, looking across the driveway at the cameras gathered behind the iron bars.

"Mr. Sterling!" Clara called out, her voice ringing clear and strong across the lawn. "You have no right to be here! This is private property!"

Sterling sneered through the iron bars. "You're a servant, Mrs. Bellamy! You don't tell me where I can or cannot stand! Grant Mercer is losing his mind because of you, and today the public sees the truth!"

The cameraman zoomed in through the bars, aiming his lens directly at Clara’s face.

"Smile for the news, Mrs. Bellamy!" Sterling mocked. "Let's see how much Grant loves you when your face is plastered across every newspaper as the gold-digger who destroyed his career!"

Clara stood her ground, her body trembling with rage, refusing to bow her head, refusing to run back inside.

SCREEEEECH!

The sudden, deafening roar of a high-performance V12 engine tore through the quiet neighborhood.

A sleek, midnight-black Maybach sedan shot up the winding hill, tearing around the corner at terrifying speed. It didn't slow down as it approached the crowd. The driver slammed on the brakes, skidding to a halt diagonally across the driveway, completely blocking the SUVs and cutting off the news crew.

The rear door of the Maybach flew open.

Grant Mercer stepped out.

He wore no suit jacket—just a crisp white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up, his tie loosened at his collar. Rain pelted down on his hair, but his face was a portrait of pure, unadulterated vengeance.

The reporters froze. Sterling’s smug grin vanished instantly.

Grant didn't say a word. He walked straight up to Richard Sterling. The sheer speed and fury of his approach caused Sterling to stumble backward, tripping over his own feet and falling hard onto the wet pavement.

"Grant! Wait—" Sterling gasped, scrambling backward on his hands and knees.

Grant ignored him completely. He stepped up to the cameraman, grabbed the heavy five-thousand-dollar television camera with one hand, and ripped it effortlessly off the man's shoulder. With a single fluid motion, Grant slammed the camera onto the hood of Sterling’s SUV, smashing the lens into a hundred shattered pieces.

"Hey! You can't do that!" the reporter shrieked.

Grant turned his head. The glare he gave the reporter was so terrifyingly cold that the woman stepped back and dropped her microphone onto the mud.

"If any of you ever bring a camera within one mile of my home again," Grant said, his voice a low, lethal vibration that cut through the sound of the rain, "I will buy the news network you work for and fire every single one of you before sunset."

The news crew didn't hesitate. They scrambled into their vehicle, leaving their ruined equipment behind, and sped off down the hill.

Grant walked over to Sterling, who was cowering on the wet ground. Grant bent down, grabbing Sterling by the lapels of his expensive suit, dragging him up until they were eye-to-eye.

"I warned you, Richard," Grant whispered softly into Sterling's ear. "I told you what would happen if you touched them."

"Grant... please..." Sterling sobbed, terror finally breaking him. "I was just trying to protect the board..."

"You're fired, Richard," Grant said coldly. "And as of ten minutes ago, my legal team filed criminal trespass, harassment, and corporate espionage charges against you. The police are waiting for you at your home."

Grant shoved Sterling away, letting him fall back into the mud.

Without giving the disgraced executive another glance, Grant turned and walked up the driveway toward the iron gates. He pressed his thumb against the biometric scanner. The heavy iron gates swung open smoothly.

Clara was still standing on the stone porch, wet from the rain, tears streaming down her face.

Grant walked up the stone steps, stopping right in front of her. He didn't look at the damage behind him. He didn't look at his ruined Maybach or the smashed camera. He only looked at Clara.

He reached up with a warm, trembling hand and gently wiped a tear off her cheek.

"Are you okay?" Grant asked, his voice softer than the rain falling around them.

Clara let out a ragged, sob-filled laugh. "You destroyed a news camera."

"I'll buy them a new one," Grant said quietly. "Are you hurt, Clara?"

Clara shook her head, looking into his fierce, beautiful eyes. "No. But... Grant, your reputation... your company... they're going to destroy you because of us."

May you like

Grant stepped closer, wrapping his strong arms around her waist, pulling her flush against his chest right there on the front porch for all the world to see.

"Let them try," Grant murmured, resting his forehead against hers. "There is nothing in that corporate building worth protecting compared to what is inside this house."
