Chapter 4 - The Shattered Glass

My sniper, positioned on the roof three minutes earlier, took the shot.

The high-caliber round didn't hit Julian—it struck the chrome revolver in his hand, shattering the weapon into a spray of hot metal and bone. Julian screamed in agony, stumbling backward, clutching his ruined right hand as blood sprayed across the concrete floor.

Viktor moved like a panther. He closed the distance in two strides, his heavy tactical boot slamming into Julian’s chest, driving the old mob boss down onto the floor. Before Julian could even draw a breath, Viktor’s combat knife was pressed firmly against his throat.

I didn't even look at Julian. I rushed over to Hannah, pulling my tactical blade from my vest and slicing through the heavy ropes binding her wrists and ankles.

I gently pulled the silver tape from her mouth.

"Sophie..." Hannah gasped, coughing violently, her hands clutching my bulletproof vest as she wept hysterically. "Is... is Sophie okay? The babies... are they safe?"

"They are safe, Hannah," I said, pulling her up into my arms. "They are in my house, protected by my men."

"He... he put something in my water," she sobbed, her body shaking against mine. "Three weeks ago... I started getting dizzy... I couldn't breathe. He came to my apartment at night... he told me if I didn't send Sophie to that store to find you, he would kill the twins in their cribs..."

I held her firmly, looking down into her terrified eyes. "You don't ever have to be afraid of him again, Hannah. It's over."

"It's not over!" Julian rasped from the floor, coughing up blood as Viktor held him down. "Look at the monitors, Whitaker! Look at your house!"

I turned my head toward the steel desk.

On the computer screens displaying the outer perimeter of my estate, the situation had escalated to total chaos. The Sheriff’s tactical vehicles had finally breached the outer iron gates. Dozens of heavily armed deputies were advancing up the paved driveway, tear gas canisters bouncing off the stone steps.

"The state thinks you kidnapped those kids, Andrew!" Julian cackled, his blood-stained face twisted into a grotesque smile. "Even if I die today, you're a federal fugitive by nightfall! You can't keep them! You can't protect them from the law!"

I walked over to Julian, standing over him, looking down with cold, absolute detachment.

"I don't need to fight the law, Julian," I said, pulling my secure satellite phone from my pocket. "I just need to show them the truth."

I dialed a direct, high-priority number I hadn't used in five years.

The line connected on the second ring.

"Whitaker," a crisp, authoritative female voice answered. "You have thirty seconds to explain why every news station in the Midwest is showing tactical teams breaching your estate before I send the FBI to assist them."

"Special Agent in Charge Miller," I said calmly. "I am currently standing in an abandoned meatpacking plant on South Water Street. I am holding Julian Vance."

A long, suffocating silence hung over the line.

"Julian Vance died eight years ago in a boat explosion, Andrew," Agent Miller said, her voice dropping into a razor-thin edge.

"Julian Vance staged his death, committed international extortion, poisoned a civilian mother, and engaged in a multi-state child trafficking operation," I replied smoothly. "I have him bound at my feet. I also have his financial ledgers, his encrypted hard drives, and the complete medical report showing the nerve agent he used on Hannah Carter."

I looked down at Julian, whose frantic grin was rapidly evaporating into horror as he realized who I was speaking to.

"I am offering you the biggest federal bust of your career, Miller," I continued. "Julian Vance alive, his entire resurrected network handed to you on a silver platter, and full testimony regarding his operations for the last eight years."

"And what do you want in return, Andrew?" Agent Miller asked quietly.

"I want the emergency custody warrant against my estate dismissed immediately," I said, my voice echoing off the concrete walls. "I want full, legal, state-sanctioned asylum for Hannah Carter and her three children under my personal protection. And I want a public statement from the Department of Justice clearing my name of any wrongdoing regarding these children."

Agent Miller paused. I could hear the rapid clicking of a keyboard in her office.

"Ten minutes, Whitaker," she said firmly. "If Vance is alive when my federal teams arrive at that warehouse, you have your deal. If he’s dead, I’m locking you up for the rest of your life."

"He’ll be breathing, Agent Miller," I said, disconnecting the call.

I turned to Viktor. "Tie him up. Hand him to the feds when they walk through that door."

"And you, Boss?" Viktor asked.

I looked at Hannah, who was standing weakly near the chair, her eyes filled with a mixture of disbelief and overwhelming relief. I walked over to her, extending my hand.

"Come on, Hannah," I said gently. "Let's go home and tell your daughter that her four dollars and sixty-three cents just bought her family a future."
