Chapter 2 - The House in the Woods and the Shadows Within

By mid-afternoon, the rain had begun to lash against the tall windows of the Moretti estate—a sprawling, stone-clad fortress situated on sixty private acres in Bedford, New York.

To the outside world, the estate was known as an architectural landmark of historical significance, owned by a reclusive private investor. To those inside, it was the nerve center of an empire. High stone walls, hidden cameras, motion sensors, and patrols of armed men ensured that no one entered or left uninvited.

Yet, as the heavy black sedan rolled up the curving gravel driveway and came to a stop beneath the stone portico, the atmosphere inside the mansion was entirely disrupted by a single pair of wet sneakers.

Mia sat in the back seat between Adrian and Marcus, clutching the plastic spray bottle like a prized doll as Marcus opened the door with an umbrella.

“Welcome home, Miss Mia,” Marcus said with quiet gravity, holding the large black umbrella over her head so she wouldn't catch a chill from the drizzle.

Mia looked up at the towering stone facade of the mansion, her jaw dropping slightly. “Is this where Mom works?”

“This is where she helps manage things,” Adrian corrected gently, stepping out behind her. “Come inside. Evelyn has prepared a room for you.”

“I have a room at our apartment,” Mia said defensively.

“Your apartment is currently empty,” Adrian pointed out as he guided her through the heavy oak double doors into the grand foyer, where marble pillars rose toward a painted ceiling. “Until your mother is discharged from St. Catherine’s, you and she will be staying in the east wing of this house.”

Before Mia could protest, Evelyn appeared from the hallway carrying a warm woolen cardigan, which she draped carefully over the child’s shoulders.

“Your mother’s room is ready, dear,” Evelyn said softly, her eyes glistening. “And we have some dry clothes waiting for you upstairs.”

Adrian watched them ascend the grand staircase with Marcus trailing behind. For the first time in years, the vast, echoing hallways of his home felt... different. Not empty, but expectant.

Later that evening, in his private underground communications room—a secure bunker filled with monitors, servers, and encrypted landlines—Adrian stood before a bank of screens displaying live feeds of the hospital room where Claire Carter lay resting under an oxygen tent.

Marcus stepped up beside him, laying a slim manila folder on the steel desk.

“Medical bills are fully covered, boss,” Marcus reported quietly. “Top specialists from Johns Hopkins have been brought in to oversee her recovery. She’ll be back on her feet in two weeks. But... there’s something else.”

Adrian didn't take his eyes off the monitor showing the sleeping woman in the hospital bed. “Speak.”

“We ran a background check on Claire Carter when she was hired three months ago through the agency. Everything seemed clean. But after today, I dug a little deeper into her residency history in Queens.”

Marcus opened the folder.

“She left her husband eighteen months ago. Mason Bennett. A low-level enforcer who used to run cards for the old Brooklyn crews before they folded into our network. He’s currently serving time in Rikers, but his release date is coming up in four months.”

Adrian’s expression darkened instantly. The temperature in the room seemed to drop ten degrees.

“Does he know about the child?”

“He knows she has a daughter,” Marcus said grimly. “And according to our informants inside Rikers, Bennett has been asking questions about where Claire relocated after the separation. He thinks she’s hiding money from him.”

Adrian slowly turned away from the monitor. His eyes were cold, sharp, and entirely devoid of mercy.

“Double the guard detail at St. Catherine’s Hospital,” Adrian commanded, his voice dropping into a lethal register. “Place two men inside her room disguised as orderlies, and four more stationed in the corridor. If Mason Bennett so much as breathes within five hundred feet of that hospital after he’s released, I want him detained permanently before he even touches the pavement.”

“Consider it done,” Marcus replied without hesitation.

“And Marcus?”

“Boss?”

“If anyone—anyone within our own organization or outside it—attempts to use that little girl to get to her mother, make sure they understand what happens to people who mistake silence for weakness.”

Marcus nodded once, knowing full well that Adrian Moretti’s warnings were never hollow threats.

Upstairs in the east wing, far removed from the cold calculus of the underworld, Mia was sitting cross-legged on a massive, cream-colored rug in a newly furnished nursery that Evelyn had hastily put together. Bookshelves lined the walls, filled with fairy tales, coloring books, and stuffed animals.

The door opened softly, and Adrian stepped inside, holding a small hardcover book about a lost bear.

Mia looked up from her coloring book, her eyes bright. “Are you done with your work?”

Adrian walked over and sat down on the edge of the plush armchair near her bed, looking entirely out of place yet completely natural.

“My work is finished for the night,” he said quietly.

“Can you read this?” she asked, holding up the book.

May you like

Adrian took the book from her small hands, opened to the first page, and began to read in a deep, steady voice—the same voice that commanded armies of men and struck fear into the hearts of corrupt politicians.

And for the first time in decades, the master of the Moretti empire forgot about shipments, enemies, and blood debts, listening only to the steady, peaceful breathing of a child who had finally found a safe harbor in the middle of a storm.
