Chapter 5 - The Showdown on High Street

On Monday morning at 8:45 A.M., the glass-and-steel skyscraper of Stonebridge Design Group’s downtown headquarters buzzed with tense energy.
In the executive board room on the thirty-fourth floor, twelve board members sat around a massive thirty-foot walnut table—the very table Ethan had restored months earlier.
Grant Sterling sat at the head of the table, wearing a three-piece charcoal suit, sipping espresso from a china cup. His legal team sat beside him, stacks of legal documents spread out before them.
“Gentlemen, ladies,” Grant said, checking his gold watch with a satisfied smirk. “It is eight-fifty A.M. Ms. Bennett has failed to respond to our settlement offer, nor has she appeared on the premises. As per our corporate bylaws, her absence during an emergency financial review constitutes a voluntary surrender of her executive duties.”
A senior board member, an elderly man named Marcus Thorne who had been a friend of Arthur Bennett’s, frowned. “Grant, this feels rushed. Claire has run this company brilliantly for six years. Her personal divorce issues shouldn't—”
“Her personal divorce issues have compromised our liquidity, Marcus!” Grant interrupted sharply, slamming his cup onto the saucer. “She misused subsidiary funds to purchase worthless real estate in the warehouse district! I have the asset freeze documents right here signed by a county judge!”
Grant stood up, buttoning his jacket, his face glowing with arrogant triumph.
“I move for an immediate board vote to terminate Claire Bennett as CEO and appoint Sterling Global as managing conservator of Stonebridge assets. Do I have a second?”
“I wouldn't recommend seconding that motion, Marcus,” a calm, powerful voice echoed from the back of the boardroom.
The heavy double doors swung open.
Claire Bennett stepped into the room.
She looked breathtaking. She wore a tailored crimson suit, her dark hair styled in soft, elegant waves, her chin held high with absolute, regal authority.
Beside her walked Ethan Reed, looking remarkably handsome in a dark navy suit, carrying a thick leather briefcase. Behind them walked Victoria Vance and two uniformed Deputy United States Marshals.
The boardroom fell into dead, suffocating silence.
Grant’s face turned from pale to ash gray. He stumbled back against his chair, his eyes bulging in shock. “Claire...? What... what is this?! How did you get into the building? Security was instructed—”
“Security works for Stonebridge, Grant,” Claire said smoothly, walking down the center of the room with unhurried, graceful confidence. “Not for Sterling Global.”
Ethan walked up to the head of the table, placing the thick leather briefcase directly in front of Grant. He unlatched the brass locks with two sharp CLICKS.
“Morning, Sterling,” Ethan said, his voice cool and calm. “I brought you those documents you were looking for.”
Grant stared at Ethan, his jaw working helplessly. “You... the woodworker...?”
Victoria Vance stepped forward, sliding a certified court order across the polished walnut table to Marcus Thorne and the rest of the board members.
“Members of the board,” Victoria announced, her voice booming across the room. “At eleven P.M. last night, the United States District Court issued a federal injunction vacating all local freeze orders against Ms. Bennett. Furthermore, forensic analysis of Bennett Architectural Holdings’ historical archives has revealed that Grant Sterling forged corporate resolutions in 2013 to illegally claim equity in this firm.”
A collective gasp swept through the board members. Marcus Thorne quickly opened the court order, his eyes widening as he read the judge’s brutal findings.
“This is a lie!” Grant screamed, his face contorting into a mask of pure panic. He turned to his attorneys. “Do something! Tell them this is invalid!”
Grant’s lead attorney took one look at the federal seal on the injunction, closed his notebook, and stepped away from Grant. “Mr. Sterling... we are withdrawing as your counsel immediately.”
“What?!” Grant shrieked.
The lead Deputy Marshal stepped forward, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt.
“Grant Sterling,” the Marshal said sternly. “You are under arrest for federal bank fraud, corporate forgery, and perjury. You have the right to remain silent.”
The entire board room watched in stunned silence as the Marshals grabbed Grant’s arms, pulling them behind his back and clicking the steel cuffs around his wrists.
Grant thrashing wildly, his expensive suit rumpling as he was forced toward the door. As he passed Claire, he stopped, his eyes filled with insane, desperate rage.
“You ruined me!” Grant spat, blood vessels bulging in his neck. “You and that pathetic carpenter! You think you’ve won?! I’ll fight this! I’ll take everything you have!”
Claire walked up to him, standing inches away, her face a mask of cold, unyielding power.
“You didn't build this company, Grant,” Claire whispered, her voice carrying across the silent room like a death sentence. “My father built it. I grew it. And Ethan saved it. You were just a bad decision I made fifteen years ago.”
Claire turned to the Marshals. “Take him out of my building.”
As Grant was dragged shouting down the hallway, the board members stood up one by one, looking at Claire with deep respect and profound relief.

Marcus Thorne stepped forward, tears in his eyes, reaching out to shake Claire’s hand. “Arthur would be so proud of you, Claire. Welcome back.”
Claire smiled, but her eyes immediately drifted past the board members to the back of the room, where Ethan stood near the glass doors, quietly watching her with a warm, proud smile.
