Chapter 6 - The Sovereign's Wrath

At 6:00 PM, Daniel Sterling’s private phone rang inside his Tribeca office.
He answered on the second ring. "Claire?"
He didn't hear her voice. He heard her frantic, gasping breaths, followed by the quiet, suppressed sobbing of a woman who had reached the absolute edge of human endurance.
"Daniel..." Claire choked out, her voice broken. "They're... they're taking Ruby."
In less than three seconds, the atmosphere inside the executive suite vanished.
Daniel stood up from his desk so violently that his heavy leather chair crashed into the window behind him. "Where are you?"
"At the apartment," Claire wept. "Julian... my ex-husband... he showed up at the bakery. He served me with custody papers. He knows about you, Daniel. He knows about the building. He said... he said you were using Ruby, and that I was letting you—"
"Claire," Daniel interrupted. His voice wasn't shaking. It wasn't loud. It was terrifyingly, perfectly level—the tone of a man who had decided to destroy a world. "Listen to my voice. Is Ruby safe right now?"
"Yes... she's in her room..."
"Lock your door. Do not answer it for anyone except Marcus Vance. He will be at your apartment in four minutes," Daniel commanded. "I am coming down now."
Daniel ended the call and looked at Marcus, who was already standing by the office door with his tactical radio in hand.
"Call our legal team," Daniel ordered, stepping past Marcus toward the private elevator. "Every partner at Sterling, Vance & Croft. I want them in my conference room in twenty minutes."
"Boss," Marcus said as the elevator doors opened. "Julian Vance didn't pull this off alone. He’s a low-level convict. Someone gave him those legal files and hired those high-end defense attorneys."
Daniel’s eyes narrowed into slivers of grey ice. "Richard."
"Your uncle met with Vance three days ago at the Metropolitan Club," Marcus confirmed. "They're planning to use a custody battle to leak story leads to the press, tank the stock price, and force the board to remove you on Monday morning."
Daniel stepped into the elevator. He looked at his reflection in the mirrored wall—the reflection of a man who had spent six years letting grief erode his will to fight.
That man was gone.
"Marcus," Daniel said softly as the doors began to close.
"Sir?"
"Notify the board that the Monday morning meeting is moved to eight o'clock," Daniel said. "And tell my legal team that by eight-thirty... I want Richard Sterling and Julian Vance ruined beyond the possibility of recovery."
Over the next forty-eight hours, the corporate world experienced the full, terrifying power of Daniel Sterling’s absolute focus.
While Claire and Ruby rested safely inside the heavily guarded penthouse at the top of Sterling Tower—where Daniel had brought them under the care of his personal staff—Daniel’s legal and financial apparatus moved like an invading army.
By Saturday evening, Daniel’s private investigators had uncovered that Julian Vance’s early parole had been secured through a forged affidavit provided by one of Richard Sterling’s shell companies—a federal crime carrying a mandatory ten-year sentence.
By Sunday morning, Daniel had acquired fifty-eight percent of the debt held by Richard Sterling’s personal investment firm, calling in every loan simultaneously.
And at 8:00 AM on Monday morning, Daniel walked into the glass boardroom of Sterling Global Holdings.
Richard Sterling sat at the table, his face pale, his hands shaking as he stared at his tablet screen. Beside him sat two officers from the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
"Daniel..." Richard stammered, standing up so fast his chair wobbled. "This... this is an outrage! You can't liquidate my holdings—"
"Sit down, Richard," Daniel said smoothly, taking his seat at the head of the table.
The board members sat in absolute silence.
Daniel opened a leather folder in front of him. "Ten minutes ago, Julian Vance was taken back into federal custody at JFK Airport while attempting to board a flight to Dubai. He has signed a full confession detailing your arrangement to bribe a parole officer and file a fraudulent custody suit against Claire Parker."
Richard’s mouth opened, but no sound came out.
"The FBI is here to escort you to their field office for questioning regarding bankruptcy fraud, corporate espionage, and conspiracy," Daniel continued, his voice devoid of pity. "Your shares in Sterling Global have been frozen by court order."
Daniel looked around the table at the remaining board members. "Is there any other business before we vote on the Atlantic Maritime merger?"

Not a single executive spoke.
"Good," Daniel said, closing his folder. "Meeting adjourned."
