Chapter 5 - The Legal War

Three weeks passed, and the quiet manor in Sewickley was completely transformed.

The grand guest rooms had been converted into bright, colorful nurseries filled with stuffed animals, books, and soft blankets. Maddie had been enrolled in a prestigious private academy nearby, where she had quickly proven to be the brightest student in her class. Rosie had gained three pounds, her cheeks turning a healthy, rosy pink.

But the peace was threatened.

Clara Carr's landlord, a ruthless slumlord named Thomas Gidley, had found out about Elliot's involvement. Seeing an opportunity to extort the richest man in Pittsburgh, Gidley had contacted the county social services, claiming that the children had been "abducted" by a wealthy businessman and that he, as a close family friend, was the rightful guardian.

The court hearing was set for a snowy Thursday morning at the Allegheny County Courthouse.

Elliot walked into the courtroom wearing his sharpest charcoal suit. His legal team, a dozen of the highest-paid attorneys in the state, flanked him.

On the other side of the aisle sat Thomas Gidley, a greasy man in a cheap suit, whispering maliciously to a court-appointed social worker.

"Mr. Whitaker," the judge said, looking over her spectacles at the documents. "This is an unusual case. You have no biological relation to these children. The law dictates that in the absence of the mother, the children should be placed in state-approved foster care until the mother’s fitness can be evaluated."

Gidley smirked, leaning forward. "Exactly, Your Honor. The rich guy thinks he can just buy children off the street. I’ve known Clara for years. I can provide a home for them."

Elliot slowly stood up. He didn't wait for his lawyers to speak. He stepped up to the podium, his presence commanding the absolute silence of the room.

"Your Honor," Elliot said, his voice calm and steady. "Three weeks ago, Maddie Carr walked into my lobby carrying her starving sister. She didn't ask for a handout. She asked for a job. She had more dignity and honor at seven years old than most men have in a lifetime."

He turned his cold, lethal gaze toward Gidley, who shrank back into his seat.

"Mr. Gidley’s idea of 'providing a home' was leaving a five-month-old baby in a freezing apartment with no heat because the rent was four days late. My legal team has compiled a complete record of Mr. Gidley's building code violations, tax evasion schemes, and illegal eviction notices. He is not a family friend. He is a predator."

Elliot looked back at the judge, his expression softening.

"I have established a permanent trust for Maddie and Rosie Carr. I have purchased the building they lived in, and it is currently being renovated into a safe, free housing facility for single mothers. If Clara Carr wakes up, she will have a home, a job, and her children waiting for her. And until that day comes, I am their shield. I am their guardian. And I will spend every cent of my fortune to ensure they never have to ask a stranger for work again."

The judge looked at the massive stack of financial trusts, medical evaluations, and character references. She didn't need to deliberate.

She struck her gavel.

"Emergency temporary guardianship is granted to Elliot Whitaker. Mr. Gidley, you are ordered to stay five hundred feet away from the children and Mr. Whitaker. Court is adjourned."
