Chapter 3 - The Ghost of the Past

An hour later, Dr. Marcus Vance finished examining Maya.

"She’s severely malnourished and suffering from mild hypothermia, Victor," Marcus reported in a quiet tone as we stood outside the bedroom door. "But she’s tough. Remarkably tough. I’ve administered IV fluids, vitamins, and a mild sedative to help her sleep. She’ll recover completely with proper rest and nutrition."

"And the dog?" I asked.

Marcus chuckled softly, shaking his head. "That hound is a miracle. The bullet was a graze—took six stitches, but no major muscle damage. The broken leg is an old, poorly set fracture. I placed a fiberglass cast on it. He’s sleeping on the rug beside her bed right now, full of fresh beef and antibiotics."

"Thank you, Marcus," I said, handing him an envelope containing fifty thousand dollars in cash. "Get out of the city for a few weeks. Go to your cabin in Michigan. It's about to get very dangerous here."

Marcus took the envelope, looking at me with deep concern. "Victor... whose kid is she?"

"Mine," I said simply.

Marcus nodded slowly, asking no further questions. He packed his bag, shook my hand, and disappeared down the secure stairwell into the night.

I walked back into the living room. The large wall monitors were flicking with stream updates from Leo’s trace.

My satellite phone chimed.

"Boss," Leo’s frantic voice exploded through the speaker. "You need to see this. The encrypted server code Julian left you... it wasn't just a database. It's a live, hidden surveillance network broadcast from a private medical facility in the North Woods."

I stepped closer to the primary wall monitor. "Put it on the screen."

Leo keystroked remotely, and the central display flickered, displaying a black-and-white camera feed.

The feed showed a secure, windowless hospital room inside a heavily guarded compound. On the medical bed lay a man connected to life support machines. His face was scarred, his body thin, but his chest rose and fell in a slow, mechanical rhythm.

A header at the top of the monitor read: SUBJECT T-01: JULIAN THORNE - SEDITIOUS RETENTION.

My heart stopped.

"Julian..." I breathed.

"He's alive, Boss," Leo reported, his tone laced with horror. "Carmine’s private faction didn't kill him six years ago, and they didn't kill him last week when they burned his house down. They captured him. They've been keeping him in a medically induced coma at a black site facility called St. Jude’s Sanatorium."

"Why?" I demanded, my hands clenching into bloodless fists. "Why keep him alive for six years?"

"Because of the harbor accounts," Leo explained rapidly. "Elena Thorne was the sole heiress to the Waterfront Development Trust—a twelve-billion-dollar legal registry that controls every cargo vessel, shipping terminal, and customs depot along the Eastern Seaboard. When Elena died three months ago, the trust defaulted to a two-key authorization code."

Leo paused, letting the reality sink in.

"Key One belongs to Julian Thorne. Key Two... belongs to Elena’s direct blood heir. Maya."

The entire monstrous conspiracy lay exposed before me like a fresh, open wound.

Carmine didn't just want power; he wanted complete, legal control of the entire city's trade routes. He had kept Julian alive in a coma, attempting to break his mind to extract Key One. But when he realized Julian had hidden his daughter, Carmine sent Marco’s hit team to hunt Maya down—not to kill her initially, but to extract her blood sample and force the trust activation before erasing her forever.

Julian hadn't just fled six years ago—he had been running a desperate, single-handed war to protect his daughter from Carmine’s shadow network.

"Leo," I said, my voice dropping into a register of icy, terrifying clarity. "Where is St. Jude’s Sanatorium?"

"Ninety miles north, in the Blackwood Ridge forest," Leo replied. "It's a fortress, Boss. Carmine has at least forty heavily armed mercenaries guarding that facility. It's suicide to go in alone."

"I'm not going in alone," I said calmly. "Send the location coordinates to my tactical suite. Then I want you to initiate Protocol Delta."

Leo gasped over the line. "Protocol Delta? Boss... that's the total war directive! If I activate that, every captain loyal to you will mobilize, and every Syndicate asset in the state will go to war!"

"Let them," I said, staring at the monitor image of my broken, comatose brother. "Carmine took my life twenty years ago. He stole the woman I loved, made me shoot my best friend, and tried to murder my daughter."

I looked toward the bedroom door, where Maya was sleeping peacefully, protected by the giant dog resting beside her bed.

"It's time to tear his kingdom to the ground."
