Chapter 5 - The Gift of a Name

The private room on the fourth floor of St. Claire Children’s Hospital was quiet and warm when Graham walked back in.

Leo was sitting up in bed, the oxygen mask removed and replaced by a small nasal cannula. His color had returned, and he was sipping slowly from a juice box while Dr. Vance adjusted his monitor.

Beside Graham walked Maya. She had been cleaned up at the hospital’s pediatric amenity center—her face was washed, her hair brushed neatly into a ponytail, and she wore a soft, navy-blue fleece sweatshirt that Graham’s assistant had rushed over from a nearby store.

"Daddy!" Leo squeaked, his voice still a little raspy from the asthma attack.

Graham rushed to the bed, pulling his son into a tight, incredibly gentle embrace. "Hey, buddy," Graham murmured, his eyes swimming with tears as he kissed the side of Leo's head. "How are you feeling?"

"Better," Leo smiled weakly. Then his small eyes wandered past Graham’s shoulder, landing on Maya standing timidly by the door.

Leo’s eyes lit up instantly. He pointed a small finger at her. "Daddy! That's the girl! That's the girl who held my hand at the park!"

Maya took a hesitant step forward, clutching her hands in front of her soft blue sweatshirt. "Hi, Leo."

"You carried me," Leo said, his little face filled with serious, six-year-old awe. "I remember your yellow shirt. You told me to keep breathing like a dragon."

Maya let out a tiny, soft laugh. "You were doing a good job dragon-breathing."

Graham turned to look at the two children. Seeing them together—the wealthy heir and the street vendor, bound by an act of absolute, selfless courage—made the last remnant of his cold, corporate exterior melt completely away.

Dr. Vance quietly stepped out of the room, closing the door behind him to give the family privacy.

"Leo," Graham said, sitting on the edge of the mattress and pulling Maya closer so she stood beside his chair. "Maya saved your life today. And she doesn't have a place to stay tonight."

Leo looked at Maya, then up at his father with wide, curious eyes. "Can she stay at our house, Daddy? She can have the blue bedroom next to mine! We can build Legos!"

Maya looked down at her polished shoes, her face flushing red. "I... I don't want to be a bother, mister. Uncle Frank is probably looking for me."

Graham stood up and reached into his pocket, pulling out a official document that his legal team had drawn up and processed through an emergency family court judge just forty-five minutes prior.

"Uncle Frank won't be looking for you, Maya," Graham said gently, placing a hand on her small shoulder. "Two hours ago, my lawyers met with your uncle and the Department of Children and Family Services. Your uncle signed away his legal guardianship rights in exchange for a full investigation into his financial exploitation of you. You are under my emergency legal protection now."

Maya gasped, her eyes flying open. "I... I don't have to sell bracelets anymore?"

"No," Graham promised, his voice cracking with emotion as he dropped to his knees in front of her once more. "You will never have to stand on a street corner in the rain again. You will go to school. You will have a soft bed, three meals a day, and a family that protects you."

May you like

Tears filled Maya’s eyes, spilling down her clean cheeks. She didn't say anything. She simply threw her tiny arms around Graham’s neck, burying her face into his wet wool jacket, sobbing with a deep, release of two years of fear and solitude.

Graham held her tight, his hand resting on her back, while Leo reached over from the hospital bed, wrapping his small arms around both of them.
