Chapter 4 - The Titan Awakens

Vance Sterling froze, his hand hovering inches from the doorframe.

The elderly lawyer’s face drained of all color. The smug, dictatorial composure that had defined him for forty years collapsed in a single, terrifying second. His silver cane slipped from his fingers, clattering loudly against the linoleum floor.

"A-Adrian..." Vance stammered, his voice squeaking like a rusty hinge. "What... what are you doing here?"

Adrian didn't answer immediately. He slowly stepped across the threshold into the small apartment, his presence looming over the room like a dark storm cloud. He didn't look at Vance. He looked past him at Marissa.

Marissa was pale, clutching her baby so tightly that Owen let out a small, soft whimper. She looked at Adrian with pure terror, believing that her boss had come to enforce the law, to fire her, to destroy the fragile life she had fought so hard to protect.

"Mr. Whitmore... I'm sorry," Marissa whispered, tears streaming down her face. "I'll leave. I promise I'll leave right now. Please don't hurt my family."

The sheer heartbreak in her voice hit Adrian like a physical blow.

He took a deep, steadying breath, suppressing the roaring rage in his chest, forcing his voice to become remarkably soft.

"Marissa," Adrian said gently, looking into her eyes. "You have nothing to apologize for. You have done nothing wrong."

He turned slowly to face Vance Sterling.

The old lawyer had recovered a fraction of his composure, though his hands were trembling visibly. "Adrian, listen to me. You don't understand the full context of this situation. This woman's husband was a liability to Whitmore Infrastructure. Your father and I handled this years ago to protect the company—to protect your future!"

"Protect my future?" Adrian whispered, his voice dangerously low. "By letting a man die on a defective scaffold? By bribing a safety inspector? By threatening a widowed mother with starvation and lawsuits while she cleans my floors to buy formula for my cousin's nephew?"

Vance blinked, bewildered. "What?"

Adrian stepped up to the kitchen table and picked up the thick blue envelope. He opened it, pulling out the official non-disclosure agreement and the cashier's check for twenty thousand dollars.

He looked at the document. There was his father’s signature at the bottom—Arthur Whitmore’s sweeping cursive—next to Vance Sterling’s official notary seal, and Marissa’s shaky, tear-stained signature from four years ago.

"You used my family’s name, my company’s resources, and the legal system to terrorize an innocent family," Adrian said, his voice rising, filling the tiny apartment with thunderous power. "You allowed my father to live a lie, and you turned me into an unwitting accomplice to a crime!"

"It was corporate self-preservation!" Vance shouted, trying to assert his authority. "If Marcus Keane’s death had gone to trial, Whitmore Infrastructure would have lost thirty million dollars in stock value! The company would have been ruined! I saved your grandfather's legacy!"

"You ruined its soul, Vance," Adrian spat, ripping the thick blue envelope and the non-disclosure agreement directly down the middle.

CRACK.

He ripped it again, and again, until the documents were nothing more than a handful of shredded blue paper. He tossed the scraps into the air, letting them rain down over Vance Sterling’s expensive leather shoes.

"Adrian, you can't do this!" Vance gasped, his eyes wide with horror. "The legal ramifications—"

"I am the CEO of Whitmore Infrastructure!" Adrian roared, stepping directly into Vance’s personal space, forcing the old man to back up until his spine hit the wall. "And as of right now, Vance Sterling, your legal services to the Whitmore family and Whitmore Infrastructure are terminated. Effective immediately."

"You can't fire me!" Vance yelled, his face turning red. "Your father—"

"My father is retired, and he gave me full voting control of the board two years ago!" Adrian countered coldly. "If you set foot on any Whitmore property again, I will have you arrested for criminal trespass. If you call, write, or approach Marissa Keane or her family again, I will use every dollar in my personal bank account to bury you under so many harassment lawsuits that you will spend the rest of your miserable life in a courthouse."

Vance trembled, looking at Adrian's face. He saw no room for negotiation. He saw no weakness. He saw only a powerful, unstoppable force driven by pure, righteous fury.

Without another word, Vance snatched his silver cane off the floor, pushed past Adrian, and fled out the front door, his heavy footsteps echoing frantically down the stairwell until the building's front entrance slammed shut.

Silence returned to apartment 2B.

Adrian stood in the center of the small room, his chest heaving. He took a long breath, turned toward Marissa and her mother, and straightened his suit jacket.

Marissa stared at him, completely stunned, holding her baby, unable to comprehend what had just transpired before her eyes.

"Mr. Whitmore..." she breathed, her voice barely a whisper. "Why... why did you do that?"

May you like

Adrian walked over to the kitchen table, pulled out a chair, and sat down. He looked at Marissa with profound humility and respect.

"Because four years ago, my family committed an unforgivable sin against yours," Adrian said quietly. "And tonight, we are going to start making it right."
