Chapter 2 - The Whispering Shadows

By 3:00 AM, the storm had transformed into a relentless, icy downpour.
In the subterranean, high-tech medical wing of the Vale estate, Sophia Bennett lay connected to heart monitors and IV drips. Her face was pale, but the oxygen mask over her nose and mouth showed steady, fogging breaths.
Outside the glass partition, Damian stood staring at the monitors. In his arms, wrapped in a plush cashmere blanket, slept baby Lily. Emma had finally fallen asleep in the adjacent private lounge, guarded by two of Damian’s most trusted lieutenants.
Owen walked up beside Damian, holding an encrypted tablet.
"We ran the tea leaves, boss," Owen whispered. "Dr. Ellis was right. High concentration of synthetic paralytic. The tea canister in Sophia’s cottage was tampered with between four and six o'clock this afternoon."
"Who had access to the staff cottages?" Damian’s voice was lower than a graveyard whisper.
"Normally, only the domestic staff," Owen replied, tapping the tablet screen to display a roster. "But today was the quarterly supply delivery. Three external contractors were on the estate premises, along with your cousin, Julian Vale."
Damian’s jaw tightened. "Julian was here?"
"He arrived at five o'clock to drop off the financial ledgers for the shipping ports in Brooklyn," Owen explained. "He claimed he spent twenty minutes in the main office waiting for you, but security footage shows a six-minute gap where he walked toward the eastern garden corridors—right past the staff quarters."
Damian closed his eyes, his mind assembling the dark pieces of a puzzle he had refused to see for months.
Julian Vale was his father’s nephew—an ambitious, slick man who managed the family’s legitimate logistics firms. Julian had always resented Damian’s absolute control over the syndicate.
"Claire didn't run from me," Damian murmured softly, staring at Lily’s small, peaceful face. "She ran from someone inside my house. Someone who threatened to kill her baby if she didn't disappear."
"You think Julian targeted Claire?" Owen asked, horrified.
"Claire found out something before she vanished," Damian realized, his dark eyes glowing with a terrifying light. "She discovered a leak in my organization. Julian realized she knew too much. He couldn't kill her while she was carrying my heir without triggering a full-scale war, so he forced her into hiding. And when Sophia took the baby after Claire died..."
"Julian realized the child was alive," Owen finished, his voice shaking. "He poisoned Sophia to silence her before she could tell you the truth."
Suddenly, the heart monitor inside the ICU room beeped rapidly.
Sophia’s eyelids fluttered. She let out a weak, agonizing groan, her hand reaching out blindly against the white bedsheets.
Damian handed Lily to Owen instantly. "Keep her safe."
Damian pushed open the heavy glass door and stepped into the room. He reached down and took Sophia’s cold, trembling hand in his own massive palm.
"Sophia," Damian said clearly. "It's Damian Vale. You're safe. The girls are safe."
Sophia’s eyes snapped open, wild and bloodshot with lingering fear. She tried to pull away, but her weakness pinned her to the mattress.
"M-Mr. Vale..." she gasped through the oxygen mask, her voice a scratchy whisper. "Lily... Emma..."
"They are in my private quarters, guarded by my personal detail," Damian assured her, leaning closer. "Emma saved your life, Sophia. She brought Lily to my study."
Tears spilled from Sophia’s eyes, rolling down into her dark hair. "I'm sorry... I'm so sorry, Don Damian... I promised Claire I wouldn't tell you..."
"Why?" Damian demanded gently. "Why didn't Claire come to me?"
Sophia swallowed hard, her chest heaving. "Because... because the traitor told her... that you were the one who ordered the hit on her father. He showed her forged documents bearing your signature... He threatened to end her pregnancy if she didn't run..."
Damian felt as if the room had lost gravity. "Julian."
May you like
"Yes," Sophia wept softly. "Julian Vale. He hired a hit squad four months ago to eliminate Claire after she gave birth in the clinic... but I managed to swap the medical records and get Lily out... Claire died of heart failure during labor, Don Damian... Her last words were for you... She wanted you to know... she never stopped loving you..."
Damian stood frozen beside the hospital bed. The grief he had buried for four months erupted inside him like a volcano, burning away every trace of hesitation, leaving behind only an absolute, apocalyptic thirst for retribution.
