Chapter 5 - THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK

Three days later.

The executive boardroom on the fiftieth floor of the Blackwell Tower hummed with tense, nervous energy.

Arthur Sterling, chief legal counsel, sat at the head of the mahogany table, nervously adjusting his silk tie. Beside him, Julian Vance tapped his fountain pen against a stack of quarterly merger reports.

“I don’t like this, Arthur,” Julian muttered under his breath. “Blackwell hasn't been in his office for three days. His security team cleared out his schedule. Rumor has it he’s liquidating assets in the Cayman accounts.”

“Relax,” Arthur scoffed, offering a smooth, confident smile. “Marcus is probably burning out. We’ve been slowly bleeding his overseas portfolios into our shell companies for years. He’s a dinosaur. He won't notice until—'

The heavy mahogany boardroom doors blew open with a deafening crash.

Marcus Blackwell walked in.

He wasn't wearing his usual charcoal suit; he wore a sharp, midnight-black tuxedo, looking like an executioner stepping onto a scaffold. Behind him marched Viktor and four armed enforcers, sealing off every exit.

Arthur and Julian froze, the color draining entirely from their faces.

Marcus walked slowly to the head of the table, pulling out the main leather chair. He didn't sit down. Instead, he placed both hands flat on the polished wood and leaned forward.

“Good morning, gentlemen,” Marcus said, his voice terrifyingly soft.

“M-Marcus,” Arthur stammered, standing up quickly. “We weren't expecting you. The board meeting isn't until—'

“Sit down, Arthur,” Marcus commanded.

Arthur collapsed back into his chair.

Marcus reached into his breast pocket, pulled out a thick manila folder, and tossed it across the table. It slid across the polished wood, stopping right in front of Arthur’s trembling hands.

Arthur opened it. Inside were bank transfers, offshore account numbers, signature verifications, and notarized affidavits linking him and Julian directly to the illegal arms smuggling ring—and to the corporate conspiracy that had forced Grace to flee for her life seven years ago.

“You sold my name,” Marcus said, his voice dropping into a lethal, rhythmic register. “You used my company to fund your criminal syndicate. And seven years ago, you tried to eliminate the person who discovered it.”

Julian bolted upright, his face white as a sheet. “Marcus, wait! We can explain—this is a setup—!”

Marcus didn't raise his voice. He didn't lose his temper. He simply looked at Viktor.

“Take them to the basement,” Marcus ordered coldly. “Strip them of their shares, freeze their personal assets, and hand them over to federal prosecutors on the racketeering charges. And make sure they know... nobody steals from my family.”

Before Julian or Arthur could scream, Viktor and his men moved with ruthless efficiency, hauling the two traitors out of the boardroom like sacks of garbage.

The heavy doors slammed shut, locking the echoes of betrayal outside.

Marcus stood alone in the grand boardroom, the morning sun streaming through the glass towers of Chicago, illuminating the skyline he had fought so hard to conquer.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone, dialing a number he knew by heart.

“Mrs. Gable?” Marcus asked softly when the line picked up.

“Yes, Mr. Blackwell? Are the girls alright?”

“They’re fine,” Marcus smiled, looking out at the endless horizon. “Tell the chef to make extra pancakes. Their daddy is coming home for breakfast.”
