PART 7 A New Dawn of Justice

The sharp ring of the doorbell hung in the air like a death knell.
Robert stood frozen with the phone in his hand, staring at the screen as notifications buzzed incessantly—emails from Quantum’s board chairman, frantic texts from junior executives, and alerts from legal counsel. The empire he and his mother had spent decades building was unraveling in real-time, dismantled by a single digital upload.
Eleanor, for all her aristocratic composure, finally looked shaken. Her hand trembled slightly as she set her wineglass down on the counter, her cold eyes fixing on Sarah with a mixture of hatred and shock.
“You’ve destroyed generations of work,” Eleanor whispered, her voice cracking slightly. “For a child you haven't even raised.”
“I raised Lily,” Sarah replied, her voice steady and unyielding. “And now, I am going to raise Emma, too. Right here, where she belongs.”
The doorbell chimed again, more insistently this time.
“Open it, Robert,” Sarah instructed, gesturing toward the front hallway. “Or I can let the state troopers waiting outside on your pristine driveway do it for you.”
Slowly, his shoulders slumped in utter defeat, Robert walked out of the kitchen and pulled open the front door.
Standing on the porch were two uniformed local police officers, accompanied by a state social services caseworker holding a bulky leather binder.
“Mr. Robert Mitchell?” the lead officer asked, flashing his badge. “We have an expedited court-ordered welfare and custody verification warrant issued out of the Hartford Family Court, regarding Docket #498-B.”
By midnight, the Westbrook colonial was no longer a monument to polished perfection—it was a hurricane zone of legal reckonings.
Federal investigators had arrived to secure digital and physical records, armed with search warrants for both the Westbrook residence and Eleanor’s Greenwich estate. Arthur Delaney had already attempted to intervene via telephone, only to be informed by federal prosecutors that his own firm was now under criminal investigation for conspiracy to commit document fraud and illegal adoption trafficking.
Upstairs, Lily was fast asleep in her bed, completely unaware of the storm raging around her family.
Sarah sat at the kitchen island, drinking a cup of chamomile tea, when the back door opened and Robert walked in. He looked ten years older, his tailored suit rumpled, his tie loosened, and his eyes hollow.
“They’ve frozen all my accounts,” Robert said quietly, leaning against the doorframe. “The board suspended me indefinitely pending the federal inquiry. Mother’s estate is being audited for tax evasion linked to the foundation transfers. It’s... it’s all gone, Sarah.”
Sarah didn't look up from her tea. She felt no pity—only a profound, liberating emptiness where her old life used to be.
“You chose to build your life on lies, Robert,” Sarah said softly. “You thought wealth and power could shield you from the consequences of treating human beings like collateral. You were wrong.”
“Are you... are you filing for divorce?” he asked, his voice trembling slightly.

“Tomorrow morning,” Sarah replied without hesitation. “Full custody of Lily. And full legal reunification proceedings for Emma.”
Robert closed his eyes, a single tear slipping down his cheek. He didn't argue. He knew he had lost everything that truly mattered. Without another word, he turned and walked out the back door into the chilly autumn night, disappearing into the guest house.
