Chapter 6 - The New Law of the City

Three months later.

Spring had arrived in Westbridge. The sun shone bright and warm over the bustling neighborhood street, melting the last remnants of winter ice.

On the corner of Westbridge Avenue and 4th Street, a brand-new bakery had opened its doors. Its bright white sign read: Clara’s Kitchen. Inside, the air was filled with the delicious scent of fresh bread, sweet pastries, and hot espresso.

The shop was crowded with happy local residents, neighbors chatting, and children buying cookies after school.

Behind the counter stood Clara Morales, wearing a clean white apron, laughing as she handed a box of warm cannolis to Mrs. Kim. Through the generosity of a private, anonymous trust fund established by the Vale Foundation, Clara had been granted full ownership of the building, erasing all her past debts and securing her financial independence forever.

Sitting at a small wooden table in the corner near the sunlit window was six-year-old Sophie. She looked healthy, happy, her brown hair neatly braided, wearing brand-new pink sneakers. She was busy coloring a picture of a dragon in a sketchbook.

The front bell chimed as the door opened.

A hush fell over the bakery. The local residents looked up, but there was no fear in their eyes anymore—only deep, profound respect.

Dominic Vale walked into the bakery. He wore a sharp, tailored navy suit, accompanied only by Tony, who stayed near the door.

Dominic walked straight over to the counter.

Clara smiled warmly, wiping her hands on her apron. “Good afternoon, Mr. Vale. The usual espresso and almond biscotti?”

“That sounds wonderful, Clara,” Dominic replied, his tone smooth and relaxed.

He walked over to the corner table and sat down across from Sophie.

Sophie looked up from her coloring book, her dark eyes sparkling with joy. “Hi, Mr. Vale!”

“Good afternoon, boss,” Dominic smiled, leaning back in his chair. “How is business today?”

“Very good,” Sophie reported proudly, showing him her drawing. “I sold forty cookies today. And I saved ten dollars for my college fund.”

“Impressive,” Dominic noted approvingly.

Suddenly, Tony leaned down and whispered into Dominic’s ear. “Boss, the Mayor and the new Chief of Police are waiting for you at City Hall for the sit-down regarding the harbor expansion.”

Dominic checked his diamond watch, then looked up at Sophie.

“It seems I have to go deal with some politicians, Miss Morales,” Dominic said, standing up.

Sophie reached into her tiny pocket, pulled out a brand-new shiny five-dollar bill, and slid it across the table toward him.

Dominic stopped, eyeing the bill with a raised eyebrow. “What’s this for?”

Sophie looked up at him with a serious, stubborn little face. “That’s your retainer for next month. Just in case any bad men forget who runs this city.”

Dominic looked at the bill, then looked around the bright, peaceful bakery filled with innocent people living without fear, and finally at the brave little girl who had changed his life forever.

He picked up the five-dollar bill, folded it carefully, and slipped it into his pocket over his heart.

“Contract accepted, Miss Morales,” Dominic said with a proud, warm smile. “Nobody is ever going to forget.”

He turned and walked out into the bright spring sunshine, the undisputed king of the city, protecting his true empire with fire, honor, and unshakeable love.
