Chapter 4 - The Awaking

The morning sun broke through the gray Chicago clouds, casting soft golden beams through the blinds of ICU Room 402 at Lakeshore Medical Center.

Nathan sat in a leather armchair beside the bed. He had taken off his suit jacket and rolled up his shirt sleeves. He hadn't slept in twenty-eight hours.

On his lap, little Sophie was fast asleep, wrapped in a fleece blanket provided by the nursing staff, clutching her white plush bunny.

On the elevated hospital bed, Emma stirred.

A low groan escaped her lips. Her long dark lashes fluttered, her hand moving slightly against the crisp white sheets.

Nathan immediately set his hand over hers—gently, carefully, as if she were made of glass.

"Emma?" Nathan called softly. "Can you hear me?"

Emma slowly opened her eyes. The bright sunlight made her wince, but as her vision cleared, she focused on the face sitting beside her.

She stared at his sharp jawline, his gray eyes, his dark hair streaked with silver at the temples—the exact face she had stared at for years in newspaper clippings and online articles saved on her phone.

"Mr.... Mr. Cole?" she rasped, her throat dry and raw.

"Don't try to sit up," Nathan urged gently, reaching for a small cup of water with a straw. "Here, take a small sip."

Emma took two small sips through the straw, her breath ragged. She looked down at her small sister sleeping in Nathan's lap, then back up into Nathan's eyes.

"Is... is Sophie okay?" Emma whispered, her voice trembling.

"She’s fine," Nathan promised softly. "She didn't get a single scratch. She was very brave, Emma. She called me from the bakery."

A tear slipped from Emma's eye, tracking through the pale skin of her cheek. "I... I'm sorry. I shouldn't have had her call you. I know you don't know us... I know you didn't know about me. I just... when the car hit me, I was so scared Sophie would be left all alone..."

"Stop," Nathan said, his voice thick with an overwhelming emotion he had never felt in his thirty-eight years of life. He reached out and gently brushed a stray dark lock from her bandaged forehead. "You don't ever have to apologize to me, Emma."

"Did... did Mommy tell you about me?" Emma asked quietly, looking away toward the window. "Before she died, she said you were a good man. But she said there were dangerous people who would hurt us if we found you. She kept us hidden because she was trying to keep us safe."

"I know," Nathan choked out, a heavy tear spilling over his own lashes. "Your mother was trying to protect you. But I'm here now, Emma. The men who hurt your mother, the men who sent that car... they are going to spend the rest of their lives in prison. They will never touch you or Sophie ever again."

Emma looked at him, her dark green eyes wide with a fragile, beautiful hope. "Are... are you going to send us to a foster family?"

The question broke Nathan’s heart into a thousand pieces.

He slid off his chair, dropping to his knees beside the hospital bed, holding her hand in both of his.

"Never," Nathan said, his voice steady, ringing with an absolute, unbreakable promise. "You are my daughter, Emma. And Sophie is your sister, which makes her my family too. I built a huge house by the lake with six empty bedrooms. I built a company worth billions. But none of it means anything if I don't have you two home with me."

Emma stared at him, her chest rising and falling in sharp gasps as she began to cry—not tears of pain or terror, but tears of a child who had finally been found in the dark.

"Dad..." she sobbed softly.

Nathan leaned forward, resting his forehead against her small hand, weeping quietly alongside his daughter as the morning sun filled the room.
