Chapter 1 - The Name on the Page

The paper in Dominic’s hands felt strangely heavy for a single sheet of standard twenty-pound corporate bond. The creases were soft, frayed from being folded and unfolded by tiny hands during a long, cold subway ride from Brooklyn.

Under the brilliant golden light of the lobby chandelier, Dominic opened the letter.

At the top, the letterhead bore the official logo of Moretti Real Estate Management—a subsidiary he owned, but rarely inspected personally. Halfway down the page, printed in cold, systematic black ink, was the notice of immediate termination for a junior accountant in the regional payroll department.

The name on the line was Clara Carter.

The name hit Dominic like a physical blow. The ambient noise of the lobby—the low hum of elevator chimes, the click of heels on marble, the muffled roar of Manhattan traffic outside—instantly faded into absolute silence.

Twenty years fell away in a single second.

"Boss?" Marco Bellini whispered behind him, his hand instantly drifting toward the inside of his tailored jacket as he read the sudden, lethal tension in Dominic's shoulders. "Is something wrong with the document?"

Dominic didn't answer. His eyes remained locked on the signature at the bottom of the termination notice. It wasn't signed by Human Resources. It was signed by his cousin, Julian Moretti—the head of internal operations for the family's Brooklyn holdings.

Dominic looked up at the six-year-old girl standing in front of him in her mismatched rubber boots. He looked past the thin coat, past the frayed yellow bow in her hair, straight into her eyes.

They were green. A brilliant, striking shade of emerald green that he had only seen on one other person in his entire life.

Clara.

"Lily," Dominic said, his voice dropping an octave, losing every trace of corporate detachment. "Your mother... her full name is Clara Rose Carter?"

Lily nodded, hugging the plush rabbit tighter against her ribs. "She was crying when the letter came yesterday. She hid in the bathroom so I wouldn't see, but I heard her. She said we have to leave the apartment in two weeks because the rent man won't wait."

Dominic slowly rose to his full height. Six foot three of broad shoulders and dark tailored wool, he turned his head to look at Marco.

Marco had served Dominic's father for fifteen years and Dominic for ten. He knew every shadow, every secret, and every debt in the Moretti family lineage. The moment Marco caught the green in the child's eyes and heard the mother's middle name, his face went completely pale.

"Jesus, Mary, and Joseph," Marco breathed under his breath. "Dominic... twenty years ago. The conservatory in Saratoga."

"Clear the top floor," Dominic commanded, his tone calm, quiet, and absolutely non-negotiable. "Cancel the dinner with the councilmen. Call my personal physician to check her for cold symptoms. And tell Julian I want him in my office in one hour."

"Mr. Moretti," the security director interjected nervously, stepping forward. "What about the child's mother? If she finds out the girl took the subway alone from Brooklyn, she's going to go out of her mind."

Dominic looked down at Lily. He gently took her small, cold hand in his large, calloused one.

"Marco," Dominic said, his dark eyes flashing with a dangerous, ancient fire. "Send a car to Brooklyn. Bring Clara Carter here. If anyone tries to stop her, or if Julian's people are near her apartment... handle it."

"Understood, Boss," Marco said, pulling his phone out before he even finished turning around.

Dominic looked down at Lily. "Come with me, little one. Let's get you something warm to eat."
