Chapter 2 - The Door's Shadow

The door swung inward with a heavy, deliberate creak.
I instinctively stepped in front of Noah’s bed, shielding his small body with mine. The man who entered didn't look like a savior. He wore a tailored charcoal suit that cost more than my monthly rent, but his eyes were completely dead—as cold and gray as a Seattle winter.
"Mr. Blackwell," the nurse said, stepping in behind him, her voice tense. "I told you, we are still processing the boy's intake. You can't just walk into the trauma bays."
"I am his legal guardian," the man replied, his voice a smooth, cultured baritone that sent a shiver of pure terror down my spine. He didn't look at the nurse. His eyes locked onto me, tracking the way my hand rested protectively on Noah’s uninjured shoulder. "And you must be Emily Warren. I’ve heard quite a bit about you."
Noah’s fingers dug into the fabric of my sweater. He was shaking so hard the hospital bedrail rattled.
"I'm Marcus Blackwell," the man said, taking a step closer. He held out a laminated ID card and a set of notarized custody papers. "Megan’s... employer. And Noah's designated legal protector in the event of her 'absence.' I'll take the boy now."
"No," Noah whimpered from behind me, burying his face in my back. "Emily, please. Don't let him."
"Mr. Blackwell," I said, my voice rising with a strength I didn't know I possessed. "The boy has a concussion and a fractured wrist. He’s not going anywhere tonight. And as his listed emergency contact, I suggest you step back."
Marcus Blackwell smiled, but the warmth didn't reach his eyes. "An emergency contact written in Sharpie on a dirty jacket is not a legal mandate, Ms. Warren. You are a stranger to this child. I am his family's benefactor. Let's not make this difficult."
He reached out to grab Noah's blanket.
Before his fingers could touch the sheets, I snatched the folded, blood-specked envelope from Noah's hand and slipped it into my pocket. I stared directly into Marcus's eyes. "Touch him, and I'll scream so loud this entire wing will be flooded with security and police. Do you really want that kind of attention, Mr. Blackwell?"
May you like
Marcus paused, his fingers hovering. He slowly retracted his hand, his smile vanishing into a thin, dangerous line. "You always were the smart one, Emily. Just like Megan said. But you have no idea what you're sticking your nose into."
He turned on his heel and walked out, his footsteps echoing down the corridor.
