Chapter 9 - The Final Stand and the Golden Dawn

The private jet tore through the night sky at Mach speed, the cabin plunged into an agonizing, suffocating silence.

I stared out the reinforced window into the endless black void of the Atlantic, my knuckles white as I gripped the armrest. My mind raced through a thousand violent scenarios. If a single hair on Lily or Emma’s head was touched... if those bastards laid a finger on Grace’s children... I would burn every safehouse, every cartel, and every intelligence outpost from here to Moscow until nothing was left but ash.

"We touch down in Chicago in twenty minutes, Boss," Vance said, stepping into the cabin from the cockpit. He was checking the magazine of his submachine gun, his face carved from granite. "The extraction team is prepped. The moment the wheels hit the tarmac, we roll straight to the estate."

"Good," I said, my voice dangerously quiet. "No negotiations. No prisoners."

When our wheels finally screeched onto the runway at O'Hare, a convoy of four matte-black armored SUVs was waiting at the foot of the private hangar. We didn't even bother clearing customs. We piled in, doors slamming shut in unison, and tore out of the airport with sirens wailing, cutting through the midnight Chicago traffic like a knife through silk.

Thirty minutes later, the iron gates of the Blackwell estate loomed ahead.

Except the gates weren't closed. They were blasted off their hinges, twisted metal smoking against the stone pillars.

"Ambush," Vance muttered, slamming on the brakes as our vehicle slid to a halt near the grand fountain.

Before the doors could even open, automatic gunfire raked across the side of our SUV, shattering the bulletproof glass into a spiderweb of cracks.

"Move! Move! Move!" I roared, kicking my door open and rolling onto the manicured lawn, returning fire with my Sig Sauer.

The courtyard was a war zone. Four of my elite guards were pinned behind the stone planters, exchanging heavy fire with a dozen masked operatives wearing tactical gear bearing Vanechkin’s insignia.

It was a professional wet-work squad—fast, ruthless, and heavily armed.

"Vance, flank them through the rose garden!" I ordered over the deafening roar of gunfire, dropping one of the operatives with a clean, double-tap to the chest. "I’m going inside!"

I sprinted across the blood-spattered lawn, leaping over a shattered marble bench and kicking open the heavy oak front doors of the mansion.

The foyer was dark, lit only by the flickering emergency lights. Shattered glass crunched beneath my boots as I moved through the grand hallway toward the private parlor.

"Daddy!"

A terrified little voice echoed from the top of the grand staircase.

My heart leapt into my throat. I looked up.

Standing on the landing was a man in a black tactical vest, holding a suppressed pistol pressed firmly against Lily’s temple. Beside her stood Emma, clutching her half-stitched stuffed rabbit, tears streaming down her pale cheeks as she shook violently.

"Drop the weapon, Blackwell!" the operative screamed, his voice echoing off the high vaulted ceilings. "Drop it or the girl loses her head right now!"

I froze.

The gun was pointed right at Lily’s temple. I could kill him—I was fast enough, lethal enough to put a bullet between his eyes before he could pull the trigger. But the risk was too high. A single twitch of his finger, and my world would end.

I slowly lowered my pistol, letting it clatter against the marble floor.

"Smart man," the operative sneered, backing toward the balcony doors that led to the rear terrace. "Now, kick the gun toward me and get on your knees."

I stared at him, my mind calculating angles, breathing slow, channeling every ounce of cold, calculating fury I possessed.

"You're a professional," I said, my voice steady, conversational, drawing his attention entirely onto me. "You work for Vanechkin. You know who I am. If you kill that child, you will spend the rest of your short, miserable life running from every syndicate in the Western Hemisphere. There is no hole deep enough for you to hide in."

The operative hesitated for a microsecond, his eyes flickering with doubt.

That microsecond was all Vance needed.

A muffled puff echoed from the shadows of the upper hallway window.

The operative’s head snapped sideways as a high-caliber round from Vance’s sniper rifle took him clean through the shoulder. He screamed, dropping his weapon and tumbling backward over the mahogany railing, crashing hard onto the foyer floor below.

Lily and Emma didn't wait. They both broke free, screaming in terror and joy as they scrambled down the stairs.

"Daddy!" Lily sobbed, throwing herself into my arms.

May you like

Emma followed a second later, wrapping her small arms around my legs as I dropped to my knees, crushing both of them against my chest so hard I could feel the frantic beating of their little hearts.

"You're safe," I whispered, burying my face in their hair, tears finally breaking free and spilling down my cheeks. "I've got you. I've got you both."
