Chapter 2 - The Serpent in the House

Silence fell over the study like a velvet cloak dropped over a blade.
Victor knew it was over. In a fraction of a second, his face transformed from stoic professionalism into a mask of frantic, cornered fury. He drew his silenced pistol from his holster, pointing it directly at Alejandro’s head!
"Don't move!" Victor screamed, his knuckles white around the grip. "Don't any of you move!"
Marco drew his own weapon instantly, but Victor was standing closer to the doorway, blocking the main exit.
I gasped, tucking my face into Alejandro’s shoulder, holding my stuffed rabbit tightly against my chest. Alejandro didn't flinch. Even sitting on the floor, weak from the near-fatal dose of peanut extract that had been slipped into his wine to trigger his severe, secret allergy, he looked like a lion staring down a hyena.
"Who paid you, Victor?" Alejandro asked smoothly, his hand stroking my dark hair in a gentle, protective rhythm while his eyes remained locked on the barrel of the gun. "Was it the Donati family? Or was it someone inside my own council?"
"It doesn't matter who paid me!" Victor spat, sweat glistening on his forehead. "You were supposed to be dead ten minutes ago! You were supposed to collapse quietly, and the doctor was supposed to sign off on an accidental allergic reaction! No marks! No blood! But this damn brat ruined everything!"
Victor’s bloodshot eyes shifted to me, dark with venomous hatred. "She wasn't supposed to be up here! She was supposed to be locked in the basement!"
"She saved my life," Alejandro said, his tone dropping into an octave of pure, unadulterated darkness. "Which means her life is worth more than this entire city to me now. Put the gun down, Victor. I might grant you a fast death."
"Go to hell!" Victor yelled, lowering his aim directly toward my head.
BANG!
The heavy mahogany double doors behind Victor slammed open with tremendous force!
My mother, Sarah, stood in the doorway holding a heavy brass floor lamp like a baseball bat! Driven by a mother's instinct upon seeing a gun pointed at her child, she swung the lamp with everything she had, slamming the weighted base square into the back of Victor’s knees!
Victor shrieked as his legs buckled beneath him. The gun fired harmlessly into the ceiling plaster as he crashed face-first onto the marble floor!
Before Victor could recover, Marco leaped forward, kicking the pistol across the room and pinning Victor’s arms behind his back with iron strength, slamming steel handcuffs over his wrists.
"GET OFF ME!" Victor roared, thrashing on the floor. "YOU'RE ALL DEAD! THE DONATIS ALREADY KNOW HE'S POISONED! THEY'RE ON THEIR WAY HERE NOW!"
My mother dropped the brass lamp, her face pale as snow, and threw herself onto the floor beside me. "Emma! Oh God, Emma! Are you okay?!"
"I'm okay, Mommy," I whimpered, wrapping my arms around her neck. "I used my bunny medicine on Mr. Moretti."
Sarah froze, looking down at the empty plastic injector shell lying on the carpet, then up at Alejandro Moretti.
Alejandro was standing now, holding onto the edge of his mahogany desk for support, but his posture was straight and commanding once more. He looked down at my mother, then at me.
"Your daughter didn't just use her medicine, Sarah," Alejandro said quietly, a rare warmth touching his sharp eyes. "She saved my life when my own men betrayed me."
Heavy footsteps rushed up the grand staircase. Six more armed guards poured into the study, led by Leo, Alejandro’s chief lieutenant and most trusted bodyguard.
"Boss!" Leo gasped, seeing Victor restrained on the floor and the shattered wineglass. "We heard a shot—"
"Victor is a traitor," Alejandro commanded coldly, gesturing to the cowering guard on the floor. "Lock him in the subterranean vault under the garage. Nobody touches him until I come down."
"Yes, Boss!" two guards barked, dragging Victor out of the room by his collar.
Alejandro turned to Leo, his tone shifting into military precision. "Victor mentioned the Donati family is moving on the estate. Seal the perimeter gates. Put snipers on the roof. I want Blackthorne Estate locked down like a fortress within two minutes."
"Understood!" Leo turned and began barking orders into his radio as he rushed down the hall.
The house fell into an organized, terrifying state of war readiness. Alarm sirens began to chim softly through the corridors, red emergency lights flickering along the baseboards.
My mother held me tightly against her chest, her body trembling with absolute terror. "Mr. Moretti... please, I'm so sorry Emma came up here... I told her to stay in the quarters..."
May you like
Alejandro stepped closer, dropping down to one knee so he was at eye level with my mother and me. He reached out his large, warm hand and gently touched my cheek.
"Don't ever apologize for your daughter's courage, Sarah," he said softly. "You and Emma are no longer servants in this house. You are under my personal protection. From this second forward, anyone who wishes to harm either of you must walk through me first."
