Chapter 6 - The Verdict of Justice

Three days later, the rain had finally stopped, replaced by a brilliant, clear autumn sky.
The story had broken nationwide. Thanks to Sam’s hacking and Daniel’s evidence, the Chicago Tribune had published the complete "Sigma Confidential" files. The revelations of a multi-million dollar money-laundering ring, the cover-up of Toby’s coma, and the brutal attack on Lily Mercer sent shockwaves through the state.
The FBI had stepped in, bypassing the corrupt local authorities.
Arthur Vance’s estate in Lake Forest was raided at dawn. He was arrested on charges of racketeering, money laundering, and conspiracy to commit murder. His assets were frozen, his political influence evaporated overnight.
Julian Vance was arrested at a private airport in Wisconsin as he attempted to board a flight to a non-extradition country. He was charged with first-degree attempted murder and hazing resulting in severe bodily harm. There were no high-priced lawyers who could save him now; the evidence against him was ironclad.
In a quiet, sunlit room at a private rehabilitation clinic in southern Illinois, Daniel sat by Lily’s bed.
The bandages had been removed from her face. While she still had weeks of physical therapy ahead of her, the swelling had gone down, and her beautiful smile was slowly returning.
The door opened, and Detective Marcus Vance walked in. He was wearing a clean suit, looking ten years younger.
"Mr. Mercer. Lily," Vance said, nodding respectfully. "I wanted to come by and give you the news in person. The grand jury just returned indictments on all counts for Arthur and Julian Vance. Marcus Sterling and Chloe Evans have agreed to testify against them in exchange for plea deals. They’re all going to prison for a very long time."
Vance walked over to Lily, his expression soft. "And Toby, the freshman pledge? He woke up from his coma this morning. His first words were asking for you. He’s going to make a full recovery."
Lily let out a soft, emotional sob, tears of relief streaming down her cheeks. She looked at her father, her eyes shining with absolute gratitude.
"Thank you, Detective," Daniel said, shaking Vance’s hand. "Thank you for doing the right thing."
"I just did my job, Daniel," Vance said. "You’re the one who saved her."
After the detective left, Daniel sat down on the edge of Lily’s bed. He took her hand, squeezing it gently.
"It's over, Lily-bug," Daniel said, his voice thick with emotion. "They can never hurt you again. We're going home."
Lily looked at her father, her lips parting. For the first time in weeks, she spoke. Her voice was raspy, barely a whisper, but it was the most beautiful sound Daniel had ever heard.

"I... love... you, Dad," she said, her smile breaking through the lingering bruises.
Daniel pulled his daughter into a tight, warm embrace, tears finally flowing freely down his face. The war was over. The justice they had fought so hard for had finally been served, and they were finally safe.
