Chapter 5 - The Turn of the Tide

Before Vance’s finger could drop, the red emergency lights mounted along the garage ceiling suddenly flashed to life, followed by a deafening, high-pitched sonic shriek.

EEEEEEEEEEEE—

The security override I had secretly punched into the master console upstairs while Daniel was grabbing the weapons finally kicked in. The automated fire-suppression system dropped heavy, industrial-grade smoke canisters from the ceiling, instantly filling the garage with thick, blinding white chemical fog.

"Hold your fire! Don't shoot blindly!" Vance shouted, coughing as the dense smoke choked the air.

"Get in the car!" Daniel yelled, grabbing my arm and yanking me toward the open door of the SUV.

We bundled the twins into their secure car seats in the back row in record time. I leaped into the passenger seat, slamming the door shut, while Daniel threw himself behind the steering wheel, his face pale as paper.

"Hang on," he gritted out, slamming the gearshift into reverse.

The armored SUV roared to life, its heavy-duty tires screeching against the concrete. Instead of heading toward the front exit where Vance and his men were clustered, Daniel punched a secondary button on the dashboard.

A hidden, heavily reinforced steel garage door at the rear of the subterranean level hissed open, revealing a dark alleyway leading straight down toward the Charles River embankment.

"Daniel, you're bleeding out!" I shouted over the roar of the engine as we rocketed backward through the secret exit, clipping a concrete pillar on the way out.

"I'll bleed later," he muttered through gritted teeth, his eyes locked on the rearview mirror as the white smoke began to clear behind us.
