Chapter 6 - A New Beginning

I ducked instinctively, a heavy fist whistling past my ear.

Years of high-end self-defense training kicked in. I grabbed my attacker's arm, twisting it violently behind his back, and slammed him against the wall. He groaned, dropping a heavy metal pipe.

"Who sent you?" I growled, pinning him.

"Vance..." the man wheezed. "Julian Vance... he's in the nursery..."

My blood ran cold. Julian Vance, Sterling's loyal lawyer, had gone rogue. With his boss facing life in prison, Vance was desperate. He wanted the babies to use as leverage to negotiate a plea deal or escape the country.

I threw the man down the stairs and sprinted toward the nursery.

The door was kicked open. Inside, Sylvie was standing in front of the cribs, holding a heavy brass lamp, her eyes blazing with fierce determination. Julian Vance stood opposite her, a pocket knife glinting in the faint moonlight filtering through the window.

"Just give me one of them, Sylvie!" Vance hissed, his voice crazed. "I just need one! I'll let you keep the other! If I don't get out of the country, I'm going down for life!"

"You'll have to kill me first," Sylvie spat, her grip tightening on the lamp.

"That can be arranged," Vance snarled, stepping forward.

Before he could take another step, I tackled him from behind. We crashed to the floor, rolling over the plush nursery rug. Vance scrambled, trying to slash at me with the knife. I blocked his wrist, my hand locking around his throat.

"You touched my family," I whispered, my voice dripping with pure rage. "That was your last mistake."

With a final, powerful twist, I disarmed him and slammed his head against the hardwood floor. Vance went limp, unconscious.

Just then, the lights flickered and surged back on. Marcus and three security guards rushed into the room, guns drawn, breathing heavily.

"Sir! The perimeter was breached by a rogue faction—" Marcus stopped, taking in the scene of the two unconscious intruders. He cleared his throat. "It seems you handled it."

"Clean this up, Marcus," I said, my voice steady but cold. "And call the police. Again."

I turned to Sylvie. She dropped the lamp and threw herself into my arms, sobbing. I held her tight, buried my face in her hair, while the twins, miraculously, slept through the final moments of the storm.

One Year LaterThe sun shone brightly over the gardens of the Vexley Estate.

The sound of laughter echoed across the lawn.

I stood on the patio, holding a glass of champagne, watching my children. Leo and Clara, now one year old, were crawling on a thick blanket spread over the grass. Leo was trying to chase a butterfly, while Clara was busy trying to eat a dandelion.

Sylvie walked up beside me, wrapping her arm around my waist. She looked radiant, her heart condition completely cured thanks to a safe, regulated treatment program my company had developed.

"They grow too fast," she whispered, leaning her head against my shoulder.

"We missed a lot of time," I said, turning to look at her, my eyes filled with warmth. "But we have the rest of our lives to make up for it."

After the dust had settled, Vexley Pharmaceuticals had undergone a massive restructuring. I stepped down as active CEO, taking a chairman position that allowed me to work from home and focus on what truly mattered.

"Are you ready?" Sylvie asked, pointing toward the garden path.

Our family and closest friends were gathered under a beautiful white floral archway. Arthur was there, smiling, alongside Marcus and Dr. Mercer, who had become a close family friend.

It wasn't a grand, high-society wedding. It was private, intimate, and real.

I took Sylvie's hand, feeling the simple gold band I had placed back on her finger earlier that morning. We walked down the steps together, toward our children, toward our friends, and toward the future we had fought so hard to protect.

My greatest empire was right here.
