Chapter 2 - The Silent Ballroom

The plastic crayon in my hand snapped in half.
The silence that swept through the luxury ballroom wasn't just quiet; it was deafening. The ambient chatter of millions of dollars in pending business deals, the clinking of crystal champagne flutes, and the soft jazz music all vanished in a heartbeat.
Emmett Stewart, a man whose face had graced the cover of Forbes twice in the last year, sat comfortably on a tiny, low-slung wooden chair meant for a six-year-old. His long legs were awkwardly bent, his tailored Italian tuxedo trousers pulling tight against his knees, but he didn't care. He looked at me with genuine warmth, completely ignoring the fact that he was currently sitting next to a tower of half-eaten chicken nuggets and a box of spilled apple juice.
"Emmett?" I stammered, my voice sounding impossibly loud in the dead room. "What are you doing here?"
"I told you in my email yesterday, Jenna. I don't miss events celebrating the people who make my empire look good," Emmett said, his voice rich and carrying easily across the polished dance floor. He reached over, picked up a green crayon, and casually drew a small smiley face on the butcher-paper tablecloth in front of me. "Though I have to admit, I didn't expect the mastermind behind the Global Tech keynote speech to be running a daycare."
Across the room, I caught sight of my brother.
Nicholas looked as if he had been struck by lightning. His mouth was hanging slightly open, his champagne glass tilted dangerously to the side, spilling expensive vintage liquid onto his pristine white cuffs. My parents stood beside him, their expressions frozen in a state of absolute, uncomprehending shock.
Nicholas broke the paralysis first. He practically threw his glass onto a passing waiter’s tray and marched across the ballroom, his face shifting from a pale white to a deep, embarrassed crimson. My parents followed close behind, their practiced high-society smiles replaced by sheer panic.
"Mr. Stewart!" Nicholas choked out, his voice cracking as he reached Table Nineteen. He tried to position his body to block me from view, offering a trembling hand to the billionaire. "I... I am so incredibly honored you could make it. There must be a catastrophic mistake with the seating arrangements. The event coordinator must have misread the chart. Please, allow me to escort you to the VIP table at the front. You’re sitting next to the CEO of Vanguard Holdings."
Emmett didn't take Nicholas's hand. He didn't even stand up. He simply looked up at my brother, his sharp gray eyes instantly turning into shards of ice. The relaxed, charming billionaire disappeared, replaced by the ruthless executive who had dismantled three rival corporations before his thirtieth birthday.
"There's no mistake, Mr. Vance," Emmett said, his voice dropping to a low, dangerous tone that made the nanny beside me sit up straighter. "I sit where the intelligence is. And right now, the most valuable asset in this entire room is sitting right here."

Nicholas blinked, his eyes darting to me in utter confusion. "Jenna? Asset? Mr. Stewart, with all due respect, my sister just writes a small lifestyle blog online. She doesn't understand the corporate world. She's... she's not a part of our circle."
"Your circle?" Emmett chuckled, a cold, mocking sound that echoed through the silent gallery. "Nicholas, the speech your company's board has been praising for the last seven days—the one that secured your firm’s ten-million-dollar venture capital funding yesterday morning—was ghostwritten by the woman you just exiled to the kids' table. If it weren't for your sister's 'little blog' and her brilliant mind, you wouldn't even be able to afford the deposit on this ballroom tonight."
