Chapter 4 - The Predators Circle

The heavy mahogany double doors splintered off their hinges, collapsing onto the marble foyer with a thunderous roar.

“Federal Police! Nobody move!”

A dozen armed officers in full tactical gear swarmed into the penthouse, their assault rifles raised, laser sights painting red dots across the walls, the furniture, and the floor. Behind them strode three men in tailored black suits, led by a tall, sharp-faced individual with cold, reptilian eyes and a badge pinned to his lapel.

“Alejandro Romero,” the man barked, his voice cutting through the chaos like a jagged blade. “You are under arrest for child endangerment, human trafficking, and exploitation of a minor.”

“What?!” María shrieked, lunging toward the lead officer. “Are you out of your mind?! This is a private home! Get out of here!”

“Step back, ma’am, or you will be detained as an accomplice,” a tactical officer warned, shoving María back against the wall with the butt of his riot shield.

My concentration shattered. The sudden spike of adrenaline and terror slammed into my nervous system like a brick wall. The fragile neural connection binding my brain to my legs instantly snapped.

“No—!” I gasped as my knees gave out completely.

I didn't just fall; I collapsed heavily back into the wheelchair, the sudden impact rattling my spine and sending a wave of nausea rolling through my stomach.

“Sara!” María cried out, dropping to her knees to shield the little girl, who sat frozen on the floor amidst the chaos.

The man in the tailored suit stepped forward, his cold eyes sweeping over the living room, lingering for a fraction of a second on my wheelchair before locking onto Sara.

“My name is Agent Viktor Vance,” the man said smoothly, flashing a badge that looked entirely too official to question. “Special Investigations Division, Child Welfare and Protection Bureau.”

“Vance?” I snarled, gripping the armrests of my chair, my eyes blazing with fury. “Esteban didn't mention any brothers in the federal police.”

“Dr. Esteban Vance is a man of science, Alejandro,” Viktor replied with a thin, mocking smile. “He cares about neural pathways and medical records. I care about the law. And right now, the law states that a multi-millionaire industrialist with a history of severe psychological trauma is harboring an unregistered, undocumented minor, using her in bizarre, unverified occult rituals that are currently broadcasting across every news network in Europe.”

“It’s not a ritual!” I roared, leaning forward, my voice shaking the glass of the windows. “Look at me! I was standing! She made me walk!”

Viktor laughed—a dry, humorless sound that sounded like dry leaves scraping across pavement.

“You stood for the cameras, Romero. A neat trick for a man whose stock prices plummeted thirty percent this morning over rumors of mental instability. You think you can stage a fake miracle, manipulate the stock market with a viral video, and use a homeless child as your prop? The SEC and the Child Protection Bureau are going to have a field day with you.”

“You lying bastard,” I whispered, my fists clenching so hard my nails dug into my palms. “You don't care about Sara. You care about the patents. You care about the clinic in Zurich. You’re working with the pharmaceutical board, aren't you? They spent millions on my failed therapies. If I walk—if a barefoot child cures what their billions couldn't—their entire industry collapses overnight.”

Viktor’s smile didn't reach his eyes. In fact, for a split second, a flicker of genuine malice crossed his sharp features.

“You always were too smart for your own good, Alejandro,” Viktor said softly, stepping closer. “Which is why you’re going to spend the next few years in a high-security psychiatric ward where no one will ever hear your miraculous stories again. And the girl…”

He glanced down at Sara, who was staring back at him with an eerie, unblinking calm.

“…the girl goes into state custody. Where she belongs.”

“No!” María screamed, throwing her arms around Sara’s small body. “You can’t take her! She hasn't done anything wrong!”

“Take them both,” Viktor ordered, gesturing to the tactical officers.

Two officers stepped forward, grabbing María by the arms and hauling her to her feet despite her frantic struggling. A third officer reached down to grab Sara.

“Don't touch her,” I rasped, my voice dropping into a register so dark and cold that even the armed police officers hesitated for a fraction of a second.

I didn't have my legs. I didn't have my feet. But I had my mind, my money, and a rage burning so hot it threatened to incinerate the room.

“You touch that child, Viktor,” I whispered, “and I swear to God, by sunrise tomorrow, every politician, judge, and bureaucrat on your payroll will be audited, exposed, and stripped of everything they own. I will buy your department. I will buy the courthouse. I will dismantle your entire life brick by brick.”

Viktor paused, his eyes narrowing. For the first time, a shadow of genuine uncertainty crossed his face. He knew who I was. He knew that even trapped in a wheelchair, Alejandro Romero commanded an empire of wealth and influence that could crush a mid-level federal agent like an insect.

“You won't get the chance,” Viktor said coldly, nodding to the officer. “Grab the girl.”

Before the officer’s hands could close around Sara’s shoulders, the little girl did something entirely unexpected.

She stood up on her own.

She didn't look scared. She looked up at Viktor Vance with eyes that seemed ancient, bottomless, and terrifyingly serene.

“You’re shouting too much,” Sara said, her small voice cutting through the noise of the room like a silver bell. “And you’re very cold inside.”

Viktor frowned, stepping back instinctively. “Get her out of here.”

“You want to take me?” Sara asked, tilting her head. “You can try. But remember what I told the man in the chair.”

Viktor stopped. “What are you talking about?”

“If you don't believe,” Sara whispered, stepping toward him, “someone has to believe for you.”

May you like

Before Viktor could blink, Sara reached out and tapped him gently on the center of his chest, right over his heart.

A sharp, violent crack—like a gunshot echoing inside a tomb—ripped through the silence of the penthouse.
