Chapter 5 - The Reconstruction of Lily

The rehabilitation clinic in Atlanta was filled with warm sunlight, the sound of soft music, and the quiet, determined steps of a little girl learning to walk again.
Lily stood between the parallel bars, her teeth clenched, her brow furrowed with concentration. Her left leg, scarred from the surgery that had repaired her shattered femur, trembled slightly as she took a slow, agonizing step forward.
"You can do it, Lily," the therapist said, standing just a few inches away. "Just one more step."
Lily hesitated, her eyes filling with tears of frustration. "It hurts. I can't."
"Yes, you can," a voice called from the doorway.
Lily’s head snapped up.
Marcus stood there, wearing his civilian clothes, a soft, incredibly warm smile on his face. He didn't run to her. He didn't pick her up. He stood at the end of the parallel bars, opening his arms wide.
"Come to me, piccola," Marcus said, his voice a steady, unbreakable anchor. "Just three more steps. I've got you."
Lily looked at her father. She saw the strength in his eyes, the absolute certainty that she was safe, and the love that had traveled across the desert and through the mountains to find her.
She took a breath.
One step.
Two steps.
By the third step, her foot slipped, but she didn't hit the floor. Marcus caught her, scooping her up into his massive, protective arms and holding her close against his chest.
Lily buried her face in his neck, her small, mended fingers clutching his shirt as she let out a soft, happy sob.

"I walked, Dad," she whispered. "I walked to you."
"I know, baby," Marcus murmured, his eyes stinging with tears as he kissed her dark curls. "You did it. And you're never going to have to walk alone again."
