Chapter 6 - The First Day of the Rest of Their Lives

Six months later, the Chicago spring burst forth with a brilliant display of green leaves and warm, golden sunlight that danced across the waters of Lake Michigan.

A brand-new silver station wagon pulled up to the curb outside a charming, sunlit four-bedroom home in a quiet, tree-lined neighborhood just twenty minutes from downtown.

Olivia stepped out of the driver’s seat, stretching her arms up toward the warm sky. She took a deep breath, smelling blooming lilacs and freshly cut grass.

There were no security cameras watching her every move. There were no lawyers waiting in the driveway. No fake smiles required for high-society galas.

The front door of the house swung open, and out sprinted Mason and Ethan, laughing hysterically as they chased a golden retriever puppy across the front lawn.

“Mom! Hurry up! You promised we’d set up the basketball hoop in the driveway before lunch!” Ethan yelled, his face flushed with the bright, unfiltered joy of a real childhood—a childhood he had finally won back.

Olivia laughed, the sound bubbling up from a place deep inside her chest that had been locked away for years. She walked up the brick walkway, her hand running along the wooden porch railing.

She wasn't running from anything anymore. She wasn't hiding.

As she unlocked the front door and stepped inside the sun-drenched foyer, her phone buzzed in her pocket. She pulled it out, expecting a message from her real estate agent or the school administrator.

Instead, it was an automated update from the federal probation office regarding the ongoing sentencing hearings downtown.

Olivia looked at the notification, then pressed a single button.

She didn't need to read about Jonathan’s trials anymore. His world had crumbled because he built it on a foundation of sand, arrogance, and cruelty. Hers was built on survival, sacrifice, and the unbreakable loyalty of two boys who loved their mother enough to walk into a courtroom and change their entire world with a single USB drive.

“Coming!” Olivia called out, stepping back out into the bright spring sunshine, letting the front door stand wide open behind her, welcoming the future into a home built entirely on truth.
