Chapter 2 - The Sieging of the Fortress

The heavy smell of burning iron drifted through the mountain air, carried by the screaming wind.

From the second-story window of his study, Nathan watched as the bright green flare of the thermal torch ate through the heavy steel locking pin of his front gate. Sparks flew in violent cascades against the blinding white snow. It would take Marcus less than ten minutes to slice through the reinforced iron.

Nathan turned back to his desk.

He was not a man of violence. He had spent his entire life studying the intricate biology of healing, spending twelve-hour shifts meticulous stitching microscopic arteries and rebuilding shattered bones. But as he looked at the medical monitors tracking the fragile, recovering heartbeats of his niece and nephews in the downstairs bedroom, a cold, primitive rage took hold of his soul.

"Doctor," Rosa whispered, standing in the doorway of the study, holding a heavy brass fire poker in her hands. "I locked the children in the master bathroom downstairs. It has a reinforced solid wood door and no exterior windows. I put extra blankets and the medical warmers inside."

"Good," Nathan said, walking over to a heavy oak cabinet in the corner of the room. He pulled out a key, unlocked the bottom drawer, and retrieved a matte-black lockbox.

Inside lay a heavy .45-caliber semi-automatic pistol—a gift from his late father, an army veteran, which Nathan had kept locked away and untouched for over a decade. He loaded the magazine, slid a round into the chamber with a sharp, metallic clack, and engaged the safety.

"Rosa," Nathan said, turning to his loyal housekeeper. "If anything happens to me, if he gets past the front entryway, you take the children out through the basement storm hatch. There is a snowmobile under the tarp in the lower shed. The key is hanging on the peg by the door. You drive down the south ridge trail toward the ranger station. Do not stop for anything."

"Dr. Pierce, please," Rosa wept, her hands trembling around the brass poker. "He has men with him. I saw another pair of headlights at the bottom of the road."

Nathan glanced back at the window.

Rosa was right. A second vehicle—a heavy SUV—had pulled up behind Marcus’s truck. Two men in thick winter tactical gear stepped out, holding heavy iron crowbars and mechanical breaching tools. Marcus wasn't just coming to retrieve papers; he had brought hired muscle to clean up the scene and make four bodies disappear in a tragic "house fire" caused by the storm.

CLANG!

A massive, echoing boom shattered the quiet of the mountain as the heavy front gates were forced open, swinging inward and slamming against the stone pillars.

The black truck roared up the winding driveway, its tires throwing up clouds of pulverized ice and gravel, coming to a halt directly in front of the mansion’s grand stone porch.

Nathan sprinted downstairs, taking the steps three at a time. He positioned himself in the center of the spacious, marble-tiled foyer, standing directly behind a heavy mahogany dining table he had dragged into the center of the hall to serve as cover.

The outdoor floodlights illuminated the front porch. Through the thick, double-paned glass of the front entry doors, Nathan saw Marcus ascending the stone steps, flanked by two imposing men in dark heavy coats.

Marcus didn't knock. He raised a heavy, gas-powered demolition saw, its circular diamond blade spinning into a high-pitched, screaming whine.

SCREECH!

The blade bit into the heavy deadbolt assembly of the front door, sending a blinding spray of orange sparks exploding into the darkness. The smell of burning steel and melting rubber filled the foyer.

Nathan raised the pistol, aiming it directly at the center of the glass door. His hands, trained through thousands of hours of delicate surgical procedures, were completely motionless.

"Marcus!" Nathan’s voice boomed across the foyer, overriding the scream of the demolition saw. "Step back from that door! I am armed, and I will open fire the second that frame gives way!"

Outside, the saw stopped spinning.

Marcus stepped closer to the glass, his face illuminated by the harsh white glare of the porch lights. He looked at the gun in Nathan’s hands and let out a cold, dismissive chuckle.

"You're a doctor, Nathan," Marcus sneered through the glass, his voice muffed but clear enough to understand. "You take oaths to save lives. You don't have the stomach to take one. You've spent your whole life hiding behind your money, your clean hospital rooms, and your pathetic pride."

Marcus gestured to the two men beside him. "Break it down."

The two men stepped forward with heavy iron sledgehammers.

BOOM!

The first blow struck the heavy safety glass. White spiderweb cracks erupted across the glass pane, but the reinforced layer held.

BOOM!

The second blow shattered the outer pane entirely. Ice and glass rain down into the foyer.

Nathan took a deep breath, squeezing the trigger slightly to take up the slack. He knew that once those doors gave way, there would be no going back. It was no longer a legal dispute, no longer a family tragedy.

It was survival.

Suddenly, from deep within the downstairs hallway, the loud, piercing chime of Nathan’s private cell phone rang out, echoing off the high marble ceilings.

Nathan didn't lower his weapon, but his eyes flicked momentarily toward the hall speaker. The phone was routed through the home’s smart system, displaying the caller ID on the wall panel beside him.

INCOMING CALL: UNKNOWN LOCATION - SATELLITE ENCRYPTED

Nathan pressed a button on his wrist remote, activating the speakerphone.

"Nathan!" A weak, desperate female voice gasped through the speaker, accompanied by the loud background hum of an industrial generator and the sound of wind. "Nathan, can you hear me?!"

Nathan’s chest tightened instantly. "Sarah?!"

"Nathan, listen to me!" Sarah sobbed, her voice raw with terror. "He has me at the old logging mill on the north ridge! He locked me in the generator basement! He brought the kids to your house to draw you out, but he left his laptop here! The financial passwords... the proof that he murdered his first business partner... it’s all on the server here! He’s going to burn this place down with me inside!"

Outside, Marcus’s face turned pale. The cold, arrogant smile vanished instantly from his lips.

"Shut that phone off!" Marcus roared to his men, lunging toward the cracked glass frame himself. "Break the door NOW!"
