Chapter 3 - The Lynch Road Garage

The industrial district on Lynch Road looked like a graveyard of Detroit's automotive past. Rusted steel girders, collapsed roofs, and overgrown weeds dominated the landscape. Rain fell in relentless waves, drumming against the roof of Rachel’s cruiser as she parked two blocks away from the target address.

The building at 4402 Lynch Road was a sprawling, single-story cinderblock garage with corrugated metal roll-up doors. A high chain-link fence topped with razor wire surrounded the perimeter.

Parked inside the gated yard, sitting beneath a sputtering halogen floodlight, was the black Dodge Charger with blacked-out rims.

Water was still dripping off its hood, steam rising from the hot engine block into the cold night air. It had arrived only minutes ago.

Rachel unbuckled her seatbelt and checked her sidearm, slipping a fresh magazine into her Glock 17 and feeling the heavy metal click into place. She adjusted her body armor, pulled her rain jacket tight, and stepped out into the storm.

She reached the perimeter fence, slipping through a gap where the chain-link had rusted away from the support post.

Inside the yard, the smell of burnt motor oil, wet concrete, and metallic rust hung heavy in the damp air.

Rachel crouched behind a rusted tow truck, her eyes locked on a small pedestrian door at the side of the main garage. A dim yellow light shone through a grimy, reinforced glass window in the upper panel of the door.

From inside, above the roar of the rain, came the sound of loud, angry male voices.

"...told you not to cause a scene at the pharmacy!" a harsh voice shouted.

"She fought back, Vic!" another voice yelled back. "She bit Tommy’s arm and tried to scream! What were we supposed to do? Let her alert the whole block?"

Rachel crept closer, her back sliding along the cold cinderblock wall until she was standing right beside the grimy window. She peeked through the corner of the stained glass.

Inside the garage, surrounded by stripped car frames and heavy hydraulic lifts, three men stood in a circle.

In the center of the room, tied to a heavy metal folding chair with thick yellow zip-ties, was Maya Vance.

Her face was bruised, her lip split, and her dark hair soaked with rain and blood. But despite her injuries, her eyes burned with a fierce, untamed fury as she glared up at the tall, broad-shouldered man standing over her.

Julian Vance.

He was thirty-five years old, dressed in a heavy leather jacket, with a fresh prison haircut and a long, jagged scar running from his ear down to his collarbone.

"Where are my kids, Maya?" Julian demanded, leaning down until his face was inches from hers. "I went to the apartment. The door was wedged shut, and the place was crawling with cops. Where did you hide them?"

Maya spat a mixture of saliva and blood directly onto his leather boots.

"You'll never touch them again, Julian," Maya hissed, her voice hoarse but steady. "I'd rather die in this garage than let you take Leo and Lily."

Julian’s face contorted with rage. He raised his heavy right hand, preparing to strike her across the face.

"Touch her again," Rachel’s voice rang out like thunder, "and you won't survive the night."

CRACK!

Rachel kicked the side door off its rusted hinges with a single, powerful drive of her heavy tactical boot. The wooden door frame splintered, slamming inward against the concrete floor.

Rachel stepped into the blinding light of the garage, her Glock raised with both hands, the laser sight painting a bright red dot directly onto the center of Julian Vance’s chest.

"DETROIT POLICE!" Rachel barked, her voice echoing off the high tin ceiling. "HANDS IN THE AIR! ALL OF YOU! DO IT NOW!"

The two enforcers—Tommy and Victor—instantly froze, their hands flying up into the air.

Julian, however, didn't raise his hands. A dark, terrifying smile spread across his scarred face. He slowly reached out, grabbing Maya by her hair and pulling her head back, drawing a heavy folding knife from his pocket and flicking the five-inch steel blade open against her throat.

"Step back, bitch," Julian growled, using Maya’s body as a human shield. "You’re out of your depth. This is a domestic matter. She’s my wife."

"She’s a victim of an aggravated kidnapping," Rachel said, her feet planted wide, her sightline locked onto the single exposed inch of Julian’s head visible behind Maya’s shoulder. "And you’re looking at twenty years to life without parole. Drop the blade, Julian."

"You won't shoot," Julian sneered, pulling Maya tighter against him. "You shoot, and I open her throat before I hit the floor."

"Try me," Rachel said, her voice dropping into a ice-cold whisper that shook the room. "I’ve watched that little girl sit in an emergency room for four hours holding a prescription note because her mother was dragged into an alley. I have zero patience left tonight."

Suddenly, the deafening roar of sirens shattered the stillness outside. Red and blue lights exploded through the grimy garage windows as four police cruisers and a heavily armored K-9 transport unit slid into the yard, blocking every exit.

"You're out of time, Julian," Rachel said. "Drop the knife."

Julian’s eyes flickered toward the windows. He saw the flash of tactical weapons, heard the deep, aggressive barking of a police Belgian Malinois outside the door, and realized his leverage had completely vanished.

With a curse, he dropped the knife onto the concrete floor and raised his bloodied hands.

"Get on your knees!" Rachel commanded as six tactical officers rushed through the doorway, slamming Julian and his accomplices face-down onto the concrete floor and pulling their arms behind their backs in heavy steel cuffs.

Rachel didn't watch them put the cuffs on Julian. She holstered her weapon, pulled a tactical knife from her vest, and rushed straight to Maya’s side, slicing through the yellow zip-ties bound around her wrists.

Maya collapsed forward, sobbing uncontrollably, her arms wrapping tightly around Rachel’s neck.

"My baby..." Maya wept, her tears soaking into Rachel’s wet uniform. "Leo... his fever... I had his medicine..."

"Leo is safe, Maya," Rachel whispered gently, pulling her warm coat over the mother's trembling shoulders. "Leo is at St. Jude’s Hospital. His fever is down. And Lily is sitting right beside his bed, waiting for you."

Maya pulled back, looking at Rachel through bloodshot, tear-filled eyes. "Lily... she called you?"

"She called 911 at 2:17 a.m.," Rachel smiled, wiping a drop of blood from Maya’s cheek. "She’s the braves seven-year-old I’ve ever met in my life."
