Chapter 11 - The Raid at Pier 4

At 11:30 PM, the rain swept across the Boston waterfront in freezing, horizontal sheets.

The Port of Boston was dark, illuminated only by towering sodium lights that cast long, sickly yellow glares across rows of stacked shipping containers. The MV Northern Star—a massive 600-foot cargo vessel—loomed over Pier 4, its engines rumbling with a deep, low vibration that shook the concrete deck beneath our feet.

I stood inside the mobile command unit of the Coast Guard Tactical Law Enforcement Team, wearing a black tactical foul-weather jacket with my military insignia pinned to the collar. Beside me stood Marcus Vance and Coast Guard Commander David Ross.

On the digital monitors in front of us, thermal cameras showed three black luxury sedans parked near the gangway of the ship.

"Target confirmed," Commander Ross said into his headset. "Julian Vance is on site. He's supervising the loading of three armored crates containing private corporate servers and bearer bonds."

"What's the status of the federal injunction?" I asked, looking at the time. 11:34 PM.

"Arthur just confirmed," Marcus reported, holding up his tablet. "Judge Prescott signed the emergency maritime seizure order ten minutes ago based on Grant's server keys. The ship is legally impounded."

"He's preparing to cast off anyway," Ross noted, pointing to the monitor where deckhands were unhooking the heavy mooring lines from the pier posts. "Julian knows if he clears international waters—twelve nautical miles out—he's home free."

"Not tonight," I said. "Commander Ross, execute the boarding order."

"Boarding team, go, go, go!" Ross ordered into his radio.

Instantly, three Coast Guard fast-response boats sliced through the dark water of the harbor, their blue flashing lights cutting through the fog, while four tactical SUVs surged across the pier, blocking the exit gates.

I stepped out of the command van, taking deep, steady breaths as the icy rain hit my face. Marcus walked beside me, his tall frame providing a shield against the wind.

Down near the gangway, chaos erupted.

Julian Vance’s private security guards threw their hands in the air as armed Coast Guard officers flooded the pier with submachine guns trained on the vessel.

Julian Vance himself—a silver-haired man in his late sixties wearing an immaculate cashmere overcoat—was caught midway up the gangway holding a metallic briefcase.

"What is the meaning of this outrage?" Julian roared, his booming voice echoing off the steel hull of the cargo ship. "I am the chairman of Vanguard Logistics! You have no authority to board this vessel! This ship is registered under a Marshall Islands flag!"

"This vessel is under federal seizure by order of the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts, Mr. Vance," I called out, walking down the pier until I stood at the foot of the gangway.

Julian turned, looking down at me through the pouring rain. His cold, arrogant eyes narrowed as he recognized my face.

"Lauren Bennett," Julian spat, a bitter smile twisting his lips. "The naval daughter. I should have known Richard's pathetic family would send their little officer to play hero."

"Step down off the gangway, Mr. Vance," I commanded, my voice carrying over the roar of the ship's engines. "Or my officers will remove you by force."

"You have nothing on me, girl!" Julian sneered, clutching his briefcase tighter to his chest. "Your brother Grant is a convicted felon! Your husband Michael is an indicted embezzler! You think a court order stops me? By tomorrow morning, my lawyers will have this injunction tossed out of appellate court!"

"Your lawyers won't be able to help you, Julian," Arthur Vance's voice rang out from behind me.

Arthur stepped out of the shadow of a tactical SUV, holding a stack of legal documents protected in a clear waterproof binder.

Julian went rigid, his face turning pale under the harsh sodium lights. "Arthur? What are you doing here?"

"I am here as an officer of the court, Julian," Arthur said, his voice trembling with emotional pain as he confronted his own brother. "Grant Bennett handed over the encryption keys to your offshore accounts an hour ago. The FBI has already raided your home in Greenwich and your office in Manhattan. They found the forged Dubai wire transfers from 2018. Michael's name has been completely cleared."

Julian gasped, staggering back a step against the gangway railing. "Arthur... you traitor... I am your brother!"

"You destroyed our family's honor, Julian," Arthur replied softly, tears mixing with the rain on his cheeks. "You used young men like Grant and framed innocent men like Michael to feed your bottomless greed. It ends tonight."

Julian looked around frantically. Tactical officers were scaling the ship's ladders; Coast Guard boats held the seaward side, and federal marshals were advancing up the gangway.

Realizing he was completely cornered, Julian let out a wild, incoherent shout and lunged toward the edge of the ship’s railing, attempting to throw the metallic briefcase containing his bearer bonds into the dark, churned waters of the harbor.

"Drop it!" Marcus yelled, springing forward with terrifying speed.

Before the briefcase could clear the railing, Marcus vaulted onto the gangway, grabbed Julian’s arm, pulled him back onto the metal decking, and brought his wrists behind his back in one fluid, powerful movement.

The briefcase clattered onto the metal deck, popping open to reveal stacks of high-value negotiable securities spilling out into the rain.

"Julian Vance," Marcus barked, slapping the steel handcuffs onto his wrists. "You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, maritime asset stripping, corporate treason, and obstruction of justice."

May you like

I walked up the gangway, stopped beside Julian as he lay pinned against the deck, and picked up a stack of wet bonds.

"My husband was clean, Mr. Vance," I said, looking down into his defeated, terrified face. "And you are going to prison for the rest of your life."
