Chapter 4 - BOX 214Before heading to the docks, I needed the final piece of the puzzle.

At 2:15 AM, my convoy stopped outside the Manhattan branch of the First National Bank on 5th Avenue. The building was dark, its massive granite pillars standing like sentinels against the night sky.

Marco bypassed the electronic security system in under ninety seconds using a military-grade pulse cloner. The vault doors, thick slabs of reinforced steel and tungsten, groaned as the magnetic locks disengaged.

We walked down into the subterranean safety deposit room. The air was cold, smelling of old paper, brass, and ozone.

I walked along the rows of silver boxes until I found it: Box 214.

I pulled out the silver key Renata had hidden in her notebook. I slid it into the lock and turned it. With a soft click, the heavy brass box slid forward.

Inside lay a black leather binder and a small USB flash drive.

I opened the binder. Page after page of handwritten ledger entries detailing payments made to city officials, police commanders, and coroners seven years ago.

And there, on page 14, was a photocopied receipt for a mechanical tampering job on a 2012 Honda Civic.

The signature at the bottom of the order belonged to Gabriel Varela.

Beside the ledger was a small, handwritten letter in neat, elegant script. It wasn't written by Gabriel. It was written by my late wife, Elena.

My chest tightened as I recognized her handwriting.

Daniel,

If you are reading this, it means Gabriel has finally found us. I discovered his men tracking Renata near her school three weeks ago. I didn't tell you because I saw how happy you were being Daniel Salgado. I saw how much peace you found in that small shop in Queens.

I paid a clerk at the bank to set up this box under Renata's name. I gathered what evidence I could. If anything happens to me, do not avenge me by becoming The Ghost again. Protect our daughter. Show her that love is stronger than the shadow you left behind.

Yours forever, Elena.

Tears filled my eyes for the first time in nineteen years. They dripped onto the yellowed paper, smudging the ink.

Elena had known. She had known the danger was coming, and she had sacrificed herself to keep the shadows away from Renata and me. She had died alone on a wet highway, holding a secret that was meant to keep me clean.

I folded the letter carefully and placed it in my breast pocket, right against my heart.

"Boss," Marco called out from the doorway of the vault. "We have a problem."

I wiped my face and stood up. "What is it?"

"Gabriel isn't trying to flee the country," Marco said, holding his radio to his ear. "His ship isn't leaving Port Newark. He just loaded six tactical teams onto four speedboats."

"Where are they going?"

"They're heading up the Hudson River," Marco said, his face pale. "Toward Manhattan General Hospital."
