Chapter 4 - THE DOCTOR’S RECKONING

The filtration system cleared the garden air twenty minutes later. Elite enforcers loyal only to Caleb—men summoned from the docks via secondary encrypted channels—flooded the estate, securing the perimeter and dragging Victor Rossi and his surviving mercenaries into the subterranean holding cells beneath the mansion.

Inside the medical wing of the estate, Dr. Harrison—Caleb’s personal physician for eight years—was held down against an examination table by two heavy enforcers. His face was slick with sweat, his glasses hanging crookedly from one ear.

Caleb sat in his wheelchair at the foot of the table. Beside him stood Elena, her arm wrapped protectively around Lily and Toby.

“I... I had no choice, Caleb!” Dr. Harrison shrieked, his voice echoing off the sterile tile walls. “Victor threatened my family! He said he would kill my daughters if I didn't administer the neurotoxin! It was a synthetic compound derived from Tetrodotoxin and heavy lead isotopes! It blocks sodium channels in the motor neurons!”

Caleb didn't raise his hand. He didn't yell. He simply gestured to the IV bag sitting on the tray beside the bed—the very compound Dr. Harrison had been injecting into Caleb’s system for nearly three thousand days.

“How long until the toxin completely flushes from my system if I stop taking it?” Caleb asked coldly.

“Three... three weeks,” Harrison stammered, tears streaming down his face. “With heavy chelation therapy and plasma exchange, we can strip the heavy metals from your spinal tissue in ten days! The damage isn't permanent, Caleb! Your nerves are intact! You can walk again! I swear it on my life!”

Caleb looked at Marcus. “Start the plasma exchange. Use the automated system. And as for Dr. Harrison... hand him over to the Federal Bureau along with the full medical logs. Let him spend the rest of his life in a federal penitentiary for attempted murder and medical treason.”

“No! Please, Caleb! I saved your life after the crash!” Harrison screamed as the guards unceremoniously dragged him out of the room.

The heavy steel door clicked shut.

Silence returned to the medical suite.

Caleb slowly turned his wheelchair around to face Elena and the children. The cold, lethal demeanor of the Harbor King vanished, replaced by the profound vulnerability of a man who had just been handed his life back from the dead.

He looked at Elena. “You saved my daughter. You starved, you hid, you suffered for eight years to keep Audrey’s child safe from the monsters in my world.”

Elena wiped a tear from her cheek, shaking her head. “She was an angel, Caleb. The moment I held her in that hospital, I knew I would die before I let Victor hurt her. I didn't do it for a reward. I did it because it was right.”

Caleb turned to his head of security. “Marcus.”

“Yes, Boss?”

“Transfer fifty million dollars into a private, irrevocable trust under Elena Vance’s name immediately. Purchase the West Hill estate for her and Toby. They will never want for anything in this life again.”

Elena’s mouth fell open. “Caleb... no, I can't accept that—”

“You gave me my daughter,” Caleb interrupted, his voice trembling with deep emotion. “You gave me a reason to breathe again. There is no amount of money in this world that can repay that debt. But Toby... Toby is family now. He protected Lily when my own guards failed. He will have the best education, the best future money can buy.”

Toby looked up, his big hazel eyes wide with shock. “Can... can I have a bicycle? A red one?”

A faint, genuine smile touched Caleb’s lips—a sight Marcus hadn't seen in over a decade. “You can have a hundred red bicycles, son.”

Caleb then looked down at Lily. She was staring at the complex medical monitors displaying his heart rate and brain activity.

“Come here, Lily,” Caleb said softly.

Lily walked over, resting her elbows on his armrest. “Are you going to get out of that chair now?”

May you like

Caleb reached out, gently tucking a strand of messy brown hair behind her ear. “It’s going to take some time, little one. It’s going to hurt. But yes... I am going to stand up. And when I do, I am going to teach you how to dance properly.”

Lily giggled, a sound that chased away eighty years of dark family history. “Okay. But I get to pick the music.”
