Chapter 5 - The Airport Runway

The rain was coming down in sheets over the runway at Seattle Municipal Airport. A small private jet sat near the hangar, its engines whining as pilot prep was underway.

Julian Vance stood near the boarding stairs, frantically shoving two heavy leather duffel bags into the cargo hold. Inside those bags were bearer bonds and cash pulled from Sterling Enterprises' emergency reserves over the past forty-eight hours.

"Hurry up!" Julian yelled at the pilot over the noise of the engines. "We need to clear tower control before the federal court injunction goes through!"

"You're thirty minutes too late, Julian."

Julian spun around.

Three heavy black SUVs swerved onto the tarmac, their high beams pinning Julian in blinding white light.

Alexander stepped out of the lead vehicle, holding a heavy black umbrella, flanked by four state troopers and Marcus.

Julian took a step back against the metal stairs of the jet, his face pale with panic. "Alexander! Listen to me! Victoria forced me to do it! She threatened to fire me if I didn't set up those offshore accounts!"

Alexander walked slowly across the rain-slicked asphalt, stopping ten feet away.

"You sat at my dinner table every Sunday for three years, Julian," Alexander said, his voice flat and devoid of emotion. "You watched me drink myself to sleep on Sophia’s birthday. You looked me in the eye and told me Lauren never loved me."

"It was just business!" Julian stammered, his eyes darting frantically toward his bag of cash. "Victoria was going to leave her shares to me in her will! She promised me!"

"Victoria is facing ten years in state prison, Julian," Alexander said, gesturing to the state troopers stepping forward with handcuffs. "And you are going with her."

"You can't prove I knew about the blackmail!" Julian shouted as a trooper grabbed his arm and pinned him against the side of the jet.

"We don't need to prove the blackmail," Alexander replied coldly. "An hour ago, our auditors discovered you forged my signature on twenty million dollars of corporate transfers last week. That's a federal offense, cousin."

Julian screamed curses as the steel handcuffs clicked tightly around his wrists. He was dragged across the wet tarmac and shoved into the back of a police cruiser, his dreams of stolen luxury ending in the back seat of a squad car.

Alexander stood on the runway, watching the red lights of the police cruiser fade into the rainy night.

For the first time in three long, bitter years, the fog of deceit that had shrouded his life had completely cleared.
