Chapter 10 - The Unbroken CircleOn Maya’s first birthday, the farmhouse was filled with light, laughter, and people who truly loved us.

Anna’s entire extended family had traveled up for the weekend. The long wooden dining table—one I had built myself in the barn—was covered in platters of grilled chicken, fresh salads, homemade pastas, and a massive, two-tiered strawberry cake topped with a single golden candle.

Children were running through the green lawn outside, playing tag with our golden retriever, while the adults sat on the porch drinking wine, laughing, and telling stories.

At 4:00 PM, we all gathered around the dining table.

I stood beside Anna, holding one-year-old Maya in my arms. Maya was wearing a tiny yellow dress with matching ribbons in her hair, staring wide-eyed at the flickering candle on her cake.

"Alright, everyone!" Anna’s father announced, raising a camera. "Single blow for the birthday girl!"

Anna and I leaned down together, placing our hands over Maya’s tiny ones, and blew out the candle together.

The entire room erupted into loud cheers, applause, and laughter. Maya clapped her chubby hands together, delighted by the noise, leaning her head happily against my chest.

As the guests moved out to the porch to eat cake, Anna and I stayed behind in the quiet kitchen for a moment.

Anna walked over to the sink, carrying a stack of dessert plates. She turned on the hot water, letting the warm steam rise into the air as she began washing them.

I walked up behind her, wrapping my arms around her waist, resting my chin on her shoulder, just as I had done a thousand times before. But this time, there was no fear. No shaking hands. No tears.

Anna turned her head slightly, smiling up at me, her skin warm and glowing in the afternoon sunlight.

"What are you thinking about?" she asked softly.

"I'm thinking about two years ago," I confessed quietly, kissing her cheek. "I’m thinking about how close I came to losing you because I was too blind to see the poison in my own home."

Anna turned around in my arms, resting her wet hands against my chest, looking up into my eyes with infinite tenderness.

"You didn't lose me, David," she whispered, her voice filled with deep, absolute conviction. "You woke up. You stood between me and the dark, and you brought us home."

She leaned up and pressed her lips against mine—a kiss that carried the weight of everything we had survived, everything we had fought for, and everything we had built together.

From the living room, Maya’s cheerful babbling echoed through the warm, sunny house, followed by the laughter of our family on the porch.

I took my wife’s hand, walked out into the sunlight, and stepped into the beautiful life we had created together—a life where love was the only law, and safety was forever guaranteed.
