  • Lainey Wilson revealed that her "frugal" fiancé once talked her out of buying a Jet Ski
  • However, she notes that Devlin "Duck" Hodges does indulge in his own splurges occasionally
  • The couple began dating in 2021 and got engaged in February

Lainey Wilson and Devlin "Duck" Hodges respect each other's major splurges.

Speaking with Taste of Country Nights with Evan Paul in August, the "Somewhere Over Laredo" singer recalled about how her desire for a Jet Ski came to be, and what the former NFL player likes to splash out on.

"Me and Duck were actually at a place called Moby Dicky's, which is our favorite restaurant ever," Wilson, 33, said of the waterside restaurant where she and Hodges, 29, had their first date.

"I saw somebody drive up on a Jet Ski, and I was like, 'We gon' get a Jet Ski, today, we gettin' a Jet Ski,' " Wilson recalled. However, "by the time I finished the beer, he [Duck] had already talked me out of it."

"I was ready to do something crazy; I was ready to get a turquoise Jet Ski." Wilson noted that her fiancé's reasoning was valid. "He was like, 'You're not gonna be here to ride it!' Anyway, long story short, I thought about it but it didn't happen," she concluded.

Weeks later, in a Taste of Country article published Sept. 9, the "Heart Like a Truck" singer revealed what Hodges likes to splurge on.

"I'll tell ya this about Duck, he's pretty frugal," she began, "except when it comes to good hunting stuff, like getting ready for duck season and having all the appropriate gear and whatever — that's his thing he likes to splurge on."

"I'm not gonna tell him what to do, because he's not gonna tell me what kind of guitar I can buy, ya know?"

Wilson and Hodges started dating in 2021. They stepped out publicly for the first time in May 2023 when they walked the red carpet together at the 2023 ACM Awards.

“I said, ‘We gonna see if you’re in it for the right reasons.’ Turns out, he is,” she told PEOPLE in June 2023 about waiting to go public with their romance.

The couple announced their engagement in February. "4x4xU forever ❤️," Wilson captioned a series of photos celebrating their relationship milestone.

In July, Wilson told PEOPLE about a major rule she and Hodges abide by in their relationship, which is to make time for one another despite their schedules.

"You have to definitely carve out the time," she says. "It has to be something that you're very aware of, and you're like, 'Okay, I've got a day off here in 10 days. I've got to dedicate that day to spend time with my person.'

Wilson continued: "And we both need that and deserve that, and it's always great. We just try to soak up those moments as best as we possibly can."
